Abstract

In airborne radar applications of oscillators, vibration can cause frequency modulation (FM) of the resonator. The incidental FM initiated by the motion can produce sideband levels sufficiently high so that radar targets are masked. Furthermore, narrowband vibration (spikes) will cause false targets (false alarms) to be displayed on the radar screen. The acceleration sensitivity of crystal controlled oscillators will be discussed. The emphasis will be on describing how resonators influence the level of vibration an oscillator is permitted to experience and still perform within specification. In addition to this, methods for reducing the vibratory motion, caused by structureborne and airborne (acoustic) excitations, will also be discussed.
