Abstract

After physical genocide, the Armenians in Turkey have also experienced a real, devastating cultural genocide. For over a century the Turkish authorities have systematically falsified Armenian history, while the remaining Armenian monuments in Turkey have been mostly destroyed or left in conditions of neglect. The places of Armenian memory in Turkey (and Azerbaijan) must therefore be reconstructed through a patient work of rediscovery and study, conducted in a context of widespread disinterest and hostility. Nevertheless this work should be done in cooperation with the open minded representatives of Turkish culture, who are perfectly aware of the importance of the issue.
