Abstract

In 1878-1879, an epidemic of mass hysteria broke out in the village of Verzegnis (in Italy in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia). A similar event happened a few years earlier in Morzine (in France in the department of Haute Savoie). The physician Fernando Franzolini then wrote a meticulous report on the episode in Verzegnis. During the same period Charcot and Freud were studying cases of hysteria. Franzolini’s report describes accurately on the one hand states of consciousness in spirit possession and multiple personality and on the other the epidemic diffusion of the phenomenon.
