Abstract

The Terramare culture developed in the Po plain (Italy) during the middle and recent Bronze age (xvie-xiie centuries B. C.). Until now, archaeologists considered this culture as a tribal organisation without social stratification. This can be explained by the important homogeneity of the burial practices (cremation urns without burial deposit) and also of the settlements: the term “Terramare” is used to indicate the banked and ditched villages, usually built according to a pre-definite plan. However, the latest studies, using spatial statistics in a GIS, seem to show a territorial organization structured or even organized in a hierarchy. The purpose of this article is first to explain the methodology used for this research and then to present the results obtained. This way, we hope to be able to define a new social structure for this culture.
