Abstract

BackgroundNoninvasive prenatal tests (NIPT) are undergoing a rapid development. The reimbursement since 1 July 2022 is contributing to an increased interest in the topic of NIPT.ObjectiveWhat is the principle of the mode of operation of NIPT? What are the starting points to improve test quality, especially by the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based methods?Material and methodsAn evaluation of the current literature and patents was carried out as well as discussions with manufacturers of NIPTs.ResultsIn this study four major areas could be identified where improvement of the validity of NIPTs is possible. While some techniques are still in the experimental stage or have not yet progressed beyond initial studies, others have already entered routine use in the form of commercially available tests. These AI-based methods are implemented in the most promising developments.ConclusionOngoing developments lead to the fact that not all NIPTs are equally suitable for every question. Clinical trials are needed to be able to assess the progress achieved by the many AI-based innovations in clinical practice.
