Abstract

The PCO2 - ventilation control system is known to reveal an open-loop condition when the subject rebreathes a high level of CO2 (such as 7%) according to the Read method. Equilibrium among receptor tissues, mixed venous and arterial blood as well as end-tidal PCO2 (PETCO2) is assumed to develop rapidly so that steady-state conditions in the stimulus - response relationship can be achieved promptly. In the present experiment, we first observed the effects of an augmenting PETCO2 with the conventional Read method (incrementing run, IR). Subsequently, PETCO2 was lowered at the same rate as that of IR but in an opposite direction (decrementing run, DR). Both the CO2 - ventilatory as well as dyspneic responses were obtained under iso-oxic condition and the results between IR and DR runs were compared.
