Abstract

Sonogoraphy plays an integral role in the evaluation and diagnosis of vascular emergencies. This lecture will address the value of gray scale, color, and spectral Doppler ultrasound in the evaluation of a multitude of vascular emergencies/urgencies involving the venous system, arterial system, and organ transplants (liver, kidney, and pancreas). Sonographic findings in patients with acute deep venous thrombosis of the upper and lower extremities will be presented. Sonographic findings in critical stenosis, occlusion, and dissection of the carotid vessels will be reviewed. The sonographic appearance of abdominal aortic aneurysms, with and without rupture, will be demonstrated. Iatrogenic injuries to vessels resulting in pseudoaneurysms, arteriovenous fistulae, and hematomas will be presented. Additionally, vascular emergencies involving organ transplants (liver, kidney, and pancreas) including arterial or venous stenosis, arterial or venous occlusion, and complications resulting from graft biopsy will be discussed.
