Abstract

This chapter discusses the fundamental equations of electromagnetic elastic discontinuous fields for a regular dielectric region by certain variational principles to supply some direct methods of linear computations. The uniqueness is investigated in solutions of the fundamental equations. A principle of virtual work is expressed and then extended by Friedrichs' transformation in deriving a nine-field unified variational principle for the region. This principle operates on all the mechanical, electrical, and magnetic fields. The principle is generalized so as to include the jump conditions across an internal discontinuity surface. They have the well-known advantages of variational principles. Their special cases recover some of the earlier variational principles.
