Abstract
Etheostoma euzonum occupies deep riffles in the White River system, Arkansas and Missouri. E. e. erizonum, characterized principally by the presence of scales on the cheek, a produced snout and small eye, is endemic to Current River. E. e. euzonum, with no scales on the cheek, a declivitous snout and large eye, occurs throughout the Upper White system and in Little Red River. Intergrades occupy the Black River system except for Current River. Isolation caused by the abrupt physiographic contrast between the upland areas occupied by E. euzonum and the Coastal Plain where the Black and White rivers meet apparently provided the opportunity for subspeciation in E. euzonum.
