Abstract
This chapter investigates the acquisition of subject-verb word order in Greek. Based on naturalistic production data from three monolingual Greek-speaking children (ages 1;9–2;9), it is shown that overt DP subjects and variable word order (SV, VS and OV(S)) are attested in child Greek at the earliest stages of linguistic production (before age 2;0). Furthermore, based on a detailed investigation of the grammatical properties of early word order, evidence is presented for early setting of the Null Subject parameter and for early knowledge of the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic principles that govern subject-verb word order in the adult grammar.
