Abstract

A new model is introduced, in which the structural instabilities associated with the van Hove singularities are reinterpreted in terms of band Jahn-Teller (JT) effects. This allows a model of the low-temperature phases of La 2 − χBa χCuO 4 in terms of static (the low-T tetragonal) or dynamic (the orthorhombic) JT phases. A solitonic model of the dynamic JT phase is presented.
