Abstract The aim of this research is to understand the relationship between sustainability and entrepreneurship of small tourism enterprises in an area of high environmental value (tourist environment) which has been threatened in different ways (e.g., COVID-19, tourist pressure, natural phenomena, pollution, etc.), considering the mediating effect of the values of the entrepreneur and the tourist environment. This is a quantitative study, using a multivariate second-order hierarchical component model. Partial least squares structural equation modelling was used for the analysis. The results indicate that sustainability alone is not sufficient for entrepreneurship. However, if sustainability is mediated by the values of the entrepreneur and the tourism environment, it does have a positive impact on entrepreneurship. Furthermore, these variables have a positive effect on entrepreneurship, therefore these values of the entrepreneur are revealed as a driver of a sustainable economic model. This work has significant implications for decision-making regarding the importance of sustainable entrepreneurship in an environmentally threatened coastal area. It is recommended that tourism companies invest in sustainable tourism actions to preserve the local environment because of its positive influence on stakeholders. This research fills a gap in the literature on the relationship between sustainability, entrepreneur values, environment and entrepreneurship. It highlights the importance of context-specific contingencies for sustainability and the impact of entrepreneurship. The study provides a novel framework for understanding the process of social change towards sustainable tourism led by the entrepreneur and his or her values. The study is limited to a very specific area of high ecological value, so we consider that it can be extrapolated to similar areas.

How do environmental knowledge, environmental sensitivity, and place attachment affect environmentally responsible behavior? An integrated approach for sustainable island tourism

Previous studies have explored tourists’ environmentally responsible behavior (ERB) from the perspectives of individual commitment, attractiveness, and involvement. This study approaches from the standpoint of environmental knowledge (EK); it probes tourists’ behavior to facilitate sustainable tourism development, and constructs a sustainable island tourism development model by integrating EK, environmental sensitivity, place attachment, and ERB. Four hundred and seventy seven tourists visiting the Penghu Islands, Taiwan, were surveyed. Structural equation modeling was used to determine the relationships among the variables and the mediating effects. Results indicate that higher levels of tourists’ EK about the Penghu Islands are associated with stronger environmental sensitivity; environmental sensitivity which tourists have for island tourism is positively associated with place attachment. The extent of place attachment of Penghu as perceived by tourists is also positively associated with stronger ERB. When tourists are highly sensitive to the attraction, they are more likely to exhibit ERB. Environmental sensitivity and place attachment were found to exert significant effects in mediating the relationships between EK and ERB. This study pioneers the integration of all four constructs in a sustainable tourism behavior model for tourists to island tourism destinations. Suggestions for marketing and implementation of sustainable tourism, and their managerial implications are proposed.

The Role of Community Social Capital and Collective Action in the Development of Sustainable Tourism

Bangelan Tourism Village in Indonesia holds significant potential as a tourist destination that delivers both economic and social benefits to the local community. This study focuses on the role of social capital as a key factor in the success of sustainable tourism development. The theoretical framework of this research centres on social capital, which includes trust, social networks and norms as essential elements that facilitate collective action between communities and the government to achieve sustainable tourism. Social capital, in its connection to sustainable tourism, enables coordination and collaboration among local stakeholders to pursue common goals. Uniquely, this study demonstrates that community‐driven collective action, supported by social capital, is more effective than government‐initiated programmes in advancing sustainable tourism in rural Indonesia, filling a gap in the existing literature. Data were collected via questionnaires from 261 heads of households in Bangelan Tourism Village and analysed using the structural equation modelling (SEM) partial least square (PLS) method. The results indicate that social capital, represented by trust, social networks and norms, has a strong positive influence on collective action. In turn, collective action has an even stronger impact on achieving sustainable tourism. The practical implications underscore the importance of strengthening social capital to promote active community participation in tourism management, through strategies such as community training and policies that foster mutual cooperation. This research provides a significant contribution to the literature on the relationship between social capital, collective action and sustainable tourism development, offering valuable insights for policymakers seeking to strengthen social capital in support of sustainable rural tourism.

Optimizing the Potential of Organic Farming Ecotourism in Lubuk Bayas as a Sustainable Educational and Tourism Destination

This study explores the potential of Lubuk Bayas village to become a sustainable educational tourism hub through organic farming-based ecotourism. As environmental awareness grows, there is an increasing demand for destinations that offer both educational and eco-friendly experiences. This research examines how Lubuk Bayas’ organic farming practices can be leveraged to attract eco-conscious tourists, promote environmental education, and support local economic growth. By analyzing local farming practices, visitor interests, and sustainable tourism models, this study identifies strategies to integrate organic agriculture with ecotourism, fostering both ecological preservation and community development. Key focus areas include infrastructure planning, community involvement, environmental impact assessment, and the design of interactive learning experiences for visitors. The study confirms that intention reliably predicts actual behavior, emphasizing that cultivating strong visitor intentions is essential for increasing engagement and encouraging sustainable tourism practices. Environmental and educational values, while essential factors, may be less appealing to some tourists because they tend to be informative. In contrast, tourists are more interested in interactive and emotional experiences while traveling. Social values have a greater influence on tourist intentions than environmental and educational values because tourists are looking for emotional experiences, immediate social impacts, and fun and interactive activities. Factors such as limited interests, social media influence, and instant gratification make social experiences more appealing. However, incorporating environmental and educational values into social interactions can increase their appeal. Key indicators for intention include interest in visiting, participation in local activities, and willingness to recommend the village, while indicators of actual behavior encompass visit frequency, involvement in community events, and sustainable actions taken on-site. These findings highlight the importance of integrating social experiences with sustainable practices in developing Lubuk Bayas as an attractive, resilient ecotourism destination that benefits both the environment and the local community. Tourism for all citizens of the world and the vital is to provide sustainable employment. In this regard, most attention of governments and their management resources to the tourism and pristine natural environment or green has been focused on other aspects of the industry, although also Country managers see gone away, but to protect and maintain environmental capacity most important challenges the countries in this field covers. Although the structure of the tourism sector crumbled a key challenge in order to reach a consensus on coherent development theory sustainability left is involved. But evidence from theoretical studies indicate that supply chain strategies as a logical time for nature online tourism industry in all its dimensions seem appropriate, limited debate in tourism research related to the acceptance there. Present paper advance knowledge of how sustainable tourism can be more public acceptance in practice of supply chain management in the tourism environment (ESCMT) by medium and small brokers in small and medium-sized tour operating in Iran deals. The results show that in the absence of regulatory pressures and cost savings, acceptance (ESCMT) in small and medium tourist enterprises will be very effective. Result of research for government executives and managers tourism agencies appropriate guidelines to be drawn.

Economic Development and Mountain Tourism Research from 2010 to 2020: Bibliometric Analysis and Science Mapping Approach

Due to hectic city lives and the growing health concerns in light of the global pandemic, mountain tourism has become increasingly popular worldwide, which has increased the related research. Based on traditional bibliometric laws, such as those authored by Price, Bradford, Lotka, and Zipf, this study acquired 1413 mountain tourism journal articles via bibliometric analysis and identified the most influential journal articles, researchers, and countries in mountain tourism research as indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database during 2010–2020. The keyword analysis revealed mountain tourism’s emerging research topics, including climate change, sustainable development, sustainability, sustainable tourism, protected areas, rural tourism, and conservation. The most influential journal was Sustainability in the mountain tourism. The research results showed that China, the U.S., and Romania produced the most significant mountain tourism articles indexed in the WoS. Most developed countries in Europe had the highest average and average normalized citations, which indicated that they may have more influence in this field as compared to other countries. Some developing countries, such as India, Nepal, and China, had higher citations, average citations, and/or average normalized citations than other countries. The main research trend was the sustainable development aspect of mountain-based tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic. We identified the research gap in WoS; although there is some research shedding light on tourism via bibliometrics, mountain tourism bibliometric analysis and science mapping via VOSViewer is scarce. The paper summarizes the critical aspects of the current discussion of sustainable mountain tourism, such as transport and coopetition (i.e., combing with cooperation and competition) in mountain tourism areas. The results indicated that government agencies and destination managers need to strike a balance between sustainable mountain tourism development and environment and natural landscape conservation after COVID-19.

Marine Tourism in The Gili Islands: A Challenge in Implementing Sustainable Tourism

In coastal areas, marine tourism is one sector with great potential to drive economic growth. One of the destinations experiencing rapid development in this sector is the Gili Islands, North Lombok. However, in the midst of the rapid development of tourism in the Gili Islands, there are various challenges related to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The beauty of the underwater world, coral reef ecosystems, and rich marine biodiversity are the main attractions for domestic and foreign tourists. The study aims to discover the challenges in implementing sustainable marine tourism in the Gili Islands. The study was conducted in the Gili Islands, North Lombok. The study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The questionnaire was distributed to business actors of marine tourism in the Gili Islands. The question form is an open question. The questionnaire was shared online. After gathering the data, the researcher analyses the data and describes the results descriptively. The study found that implementing sustainable marine tourism in the Gili Islands confronts serious problems encompassing a lack of supervision, a lack of resources, a lack of collaboration between stakeholders, and a lack of sustainable education initiatives. The stakeholders should consider those aspects in implementing sustainable tourism in the Gili Islands. It is hoped that the research results can contribute to the development of sustainable tourism management models in the islands and become a reference for stakeholders in formulating more effective and inclusive policy strategies.

Immersive digital experiences: Fostering sustainable practices and positive perceptions among Gen Z tourists in village tourism

The rapid development of immersive technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR), presents novel opportunities to enhance tourist experiences and promote sustainable village tourism. This study is particularly significant as Generation Z, as digitally savvy travellers, plays a strategic role in shaping sustainable tourism practices, especially within rural destinations. The research aims to examine the influence of Generation Z’s awareness of immersive technologies on their positive attitudes toward village tourism, visit intentions, and perceptions of the role of immersive technologies in supporting sustainable tourism principles. A quantitative approach was employed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). Data were collected through structured questionnaires from 150 Generation Z respondents across various regions who have previously interacted with immersive technologies and plan to visit village tourism destinations. The findings indicate that awareness of immersive technologies significantly enhances positive attitudes toward village tourism, which in turn influences visit intentions and perceptions of immersive technologies’ role in fostering community-oriented sustainable tourism. These results underscore that integrating immersive technologies not only enriches tourist experiences but also supports cultural preservation, local economic empowerment, and sustainable tourism practices. Practically, the findings provide guidance for village tourism managers, policymakers, and stakeholders in designing effective digital strategies to develop community-based sustainable tourism initiatives.

Challenges and strategies for sustainable heritage tourism development through local community empowerment

This research focuses on the critical challenges and strategies in developing sustainable tourism in the Jambi Province Heritage Site area by involving the active participation of local communities. Sustainable tourism is defined as an approach to tourism that aims to maintain sustainability in terms of economic, social, and environmental aspects. The research method approach includes the use of mixed methods, combining qualitative analysis using QDA Miner software and quantitative analysis with SmartPLS. The results showed that active local community empowerment and socio-cultural factors have a significant impact on sustainable tourism. The implications of this study highlight the need for a holistic approach that brings together the values of culture, nature and the tourism ecosystem to achieve sustainability goals. Sustainable tourism is not simply a replication of urban planning improvements, but must combine the values of nature, community cooperation, and cultural preservation with community welfare. This research provides a meaningful contribution in formulating sustainable tourism models and strategies that can be applied in Jambi Province, focusing on cultural and environmental preservation efforts and improving community welfare through local community empowerment to achieve sustainable tourism development.

Inclusive tourism: A driving force for collaborative governance in advancing sustainable village tourism

This study aims to investigate the relationship between collaborative governance inclusive tourism in fostering sustainable tourism development in Bali. Employing a quantitative approach, data was collected from a comprehensive sample of 137 tourism villages across in Bali. This study implemented Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) as a robust statistical methodology technique to analyze the relationship between collaborative governance, inclusive tourism, and sustainable tourism. This study draws upon the tenets of Collaboration Theory, which underscores the critical role of collaboration in realizing sustainable tourism villages. The findings of this research reveal that collaborative governance provides a significant positive influence on sustainable tourism. Notably, this impact is amplified by the moderating effect of inclusive tourism, suggesting that inclusive tourism plays a multifaceted and complex role in the intricate nexus between collaborative governance and sustainable tourism in tourism villages. Overall, the research suggests that the combination of collaborative governance and inclusive tourism is a powerful recipe for sustainable village tourism.

The Role of Environmental Responsibility and Community Support in Halal Tourism Development

This study investigates the role of environmental responsibility and community support in shaping perceptions of halal tourism through the Social-Ecological Systems (SES) Theory. Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and a survey-based approach, data were collected from 300 respondents across three major halal tourism destinations in Indonesia: Lombok, Aceh, and West Sumatra. The findings reveal that community support significantly influences the perception of halal tourism, highlighting the importance of cultural alignment and local participation in tourism development. Additionally, environmental responsibility positively affects perceptions of halal tourism, suggesting that sustainable practices enhance the sector’s appeal. The study emphasizes that integrating ecological concerns with community engagement fosters a more inclusive and sustainable halal tourism model. These insights contribute to the growing discourse on sustainable tourism, offering practical implications for policymakers and industry stakeholders in designing effective halal tourism strategies. By aligning tourism development with environmental stewardship and local community interests, halal tourism can achieve long-term success while maintaining cultural and ecological sustainability.

Mapping a Sustainable and Responsible Tourism Paradigm: A Bibliometric and Citation Network Analysis

Sustainable tourism as a concept, and responsible tourism as its successful implementation, represent two major challenges for researchers in different academic fields and for tourism stakeholders in destinations responsible for sustainable tourism planning, policies, actions, and outcomes. This paper provides a bibliometric inventory of research published in the field of sustainable and responsible tourism (SRT). The results identify the publications on SRT; author cooperation between countries and their nodes; the disciplinary areas of SRT and the influential works, journals, and authors; and the bibliometric clusters. The aim of the study was to determine whether SRT has merged into a single “responsustainable” tourism discourse that could shift the mainstream paradigm of sustainable tourism towards the full content of SRT. The analysis was unable to confirm this shift towards an expanded paradigm of SRT but the results do indicate that SRT will remain an important area of tourism research for the foreseeable future.

Synergizing Halal and Sustainable Tourism Practices: Their Influence on Tourist Satisfaction

As a sector anticipated to prosper in the long run, the Indonesian tourism industry should create a sustainable tourism model that takes into account the social, environmental, and economic impacts both now and in the future, while addressing the needs of local communities, the environment, the industry, and visitors. Considering that Indonesia is a country with a majority Muslim population, implementing halal tourism is very important for Muslim tourists in Indonesia. Halal tourism is a concept that focuses on meeting the essential needs of Muslims at tourist destinations, including provisions for worship, purification, and travel in accordance with Sharia law. This study aims to examine the impact of sustainable and halal tourism on tourist satisfaction within the Mandalika Special Economic Zone. This study was conducted among 200 Muslim tourists who visited the Mandalika Special Economic Zone by administering an online questionnaire via Google Forms. The collected data were analyzed using PLS-SEM (Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling), which revealed that sustainable tourism significantly impacts halal tourism. In turn, halal tourism significantly affects tourists' perceived value, which in turn significantly influences tourist satisfaction. Therefore, to achieve or increase tourist satisfaction, it is necessary to increase sustainable tourism, halal tourism, and tourist perceived value.

Can consumption of local food contribute to sustainable tourism? Evidence from the perception of domestic tourists

The nexus of tourism and sustainability has emerged as a catchphrase in academic literature in recent years. The present study employed an integrated path model to investigate the increasing significance of sustainable tourism, which is attributed, in part, to the penchant of domestic tourists to consume locally sourced food. The investigation additionally ascertains the potential influence of local food products on the various dimensions of sustainability, including economic, cultural, social, and environmental aspects. Data is collected using a purposeful sample technique, with 462 responses from domestic tourists to the Kashmir Valley being screened and analyzed using SPSS and partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings derived from PLS-SEM analysis demonstrate that the act of domestic tourists consuming locally produced food has a considerable and statistically significant influence on sustainability-focused tourism. Furthermore, the consumption of locally grown foods has a positive influence on various dimensions of sustainability, including the economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects. The present study contributes to the existing scholarly literature on the subjects of regional gastronomy and sustainable tourism. In the current work, the authors aim to present the potential of local food to promote sustainable tourism in the tourist host regions. The outcomes of this research can be utilized by policymakers in the tourism sector to enhance their ability to effectively market indigenous cuisine, thereby sustaining the industry’s enduring viability.

Evaluation of the physicochemical properties of alluvial and colluvial soils formed under ustic moisture regime using multivariate geostatistical techniques

The purpose of this study, which was carried out in the areas of Amasya Gökhöyük Agricultural Enterprise, Turkey, was to determine area management factors that will induce management practices unique to alluvial and colluvial areas using multivariate geostatistical techniques. Physical and chemical analyses were done for 224 soil samples taken at 0–30 cm depth from Entisol and Inceptisol soils. Based on the factor analysis results of the data set prepared, factors were determined, and these factors were named to as soil texture, soil organic matter, fertilization, and pH. While the texture factor accounted for the highest variability with 32.17% and the pH factor accounted for the lowest variability with 10.45%, the four factors together accounted for 79.17% of the total variance. According to the spatial distribution maps, soil texture and soil organic matter factors reached the highest values in alluvial areas close to Çekerek Creek while fertilization factor reached the highest values in colluvial areas. However, pH showed a relatively more homogenous distribution and reached its highest values in areas close to the transition zone of alluvial and colluvial areas. Based on these results, it can be seen that the aforementioned factors are the most important soil factors for these areas.
