• European journal of pediatrics
 • Josefa Barrio-Torres + 7 more

This study aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the CDPQOL questionnaire, a coeliac disease (CD)-specific paediatric health-related quality of life (HRQoL) instrument (CDPQOL), in Spanish children with CD. The CDPQOL questionnaire has two versions for children aged 8-12 and 13-18. Translation and linguistic validation were performed following an international consensus process. Internal consistency was calculated using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients, and convergent validity was assessed with average variance extracted (AVE). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA), when necessary, were carried out to assess the construct validity. A total of 235 children were included. In the 8-12 age group, a change in the distribution of items to a new structure of three dimensions (negative emotions, food feelings and social interaction) was required. In this new model, CFA supported the fit of the model (χ2/gl = 1.79, RMSEA = 0.077 (IC 95% 0.05-0.100), CFI = 0.969, TLI 0.960, SRMR = 0.081) and Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients were > 0.7 in all three dimensions. In the 13-18 age group, CFA showed that all fit indexes were acceptable (χ2/gl = 1.702, RMSEA = 0.102 (IC 95% 0.077-0.127), p < 0.001, CFI = 0.956, TLI = 0.947, SRMR = 0.103) and Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients were > 0.7 in all three dimensions, except for uncertainty dimension. Conclusions: The Spanish version of the CDPQOL questionnaire is a useful instrument to assess quality of life in coeliac children whose native language was Spanish spoken in Spain, with changes in item distribution in the younger age group questionnaire. What is Known: • The first specific questionnaire for coeliac children, Dutch Coeliac Disease Questionnaire (CDDUX), which focuses on diet, was translated into Spanish and validated allowing to evaluate the HRQoL of Spanish coeliac children. • Spanish Children and parents feel the disease had no substantial negative impacts on patient HRQoL using this questionnaire, similar to that observed with other countries. What is New: • The age specific for CD children (CDPQOL) was elaborated in the USA and focuses on other aspects not evaluated by CDDUX such as emotional and social issues related to living with CD. • The CDPQOL was translated into Spanish and validated allowing it to be used to assess Spanish coeliac children's QoL.

 • Min Kyu Choi + 2 more

Unilateral vocal cord palsy (UVCP) is frequently observed in patients with stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the association between objective dysphonia severity and the classification of UVCP in patients with stroke by objectively and quantitatively measuring their phonetic function. We recruited patients with UVCP diagnosed using laryngoscopy after stroke. Subgroups were divided according to UVCP type, and the dysphonia severity index (DSI) and maximum phonation time (MPT) were measured to objectively evaluate dysphonia. The DSI and MPT were compared between subgroups using analysis of variance with Tukey's honest significant difference post hoc test. In total, 103 patients with stroke and UVCP were recruited. We found that a higher UVCP severity possibly had to do with lower DSI and MPT values. We objectively confirmed that phonetic function was worse in patients with stroke with higher UVCP severity, and the DSI and MPT tests can be helpful in determining the severity and need for additional evaluation.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate our rehabilitation results in patients with unilateral vocal cord paralysis, which significantly reduces a person's quality of life and motivation to enjoy life. Patients and Methods: This retrospective study included 12 patients (10 females, 2 males; mean age: 44.3±15.5 years; range, 23 to 71 years) who were diagnosed with dysphonia caused by unilateral vocal cord paralysis and received voice therapy between April 2022 and October 2024. Before voice therapy, videolaryngostroboscopy was performed on each patient. The duration and degree of direct and indirect voice therapy techniques varied based on the patients' dysphonia features. To evaluate the therapy results, voice handicap index and maximum phonation time scores were obtained before and after therapy, and the results were compared. Results: A significant difference was found between the patients' maximum phonation times and voice handicap index values before and after therapy (p<0.01). Conclusion: Voice therapy is an effective therapeutic strategy for dysphonia in people with unilateral vocal cord paralysis, with early rehabilitation being more beneficial. In clinical settings, maximum phonation time and voice handicap index can be used to assess the efficacy of voice treatment.

 • Seyedmohammad Mirhosseini + 7 more

This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Farsi version of the Electroconvulsive Therapy-Related Anxiety Questionnaire (ERAQ). This methodological study was conducted among patients undergoing or with a history of Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) in Mashhad, Iran, during 2024-2025. Data were collected using a demographic profile form and the ERAQ. The questionnaire was translated into Farsi using the forward-backward translation method, and its face and content validity were assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively. To evaluate construct validity, exploratory factor analysis (n = 150) and confirmatory factor analysis (n = 150) were performed. Convergent validity was examined using Composite Reliability and Average Variance Extracted values, while discriminant validity was assessed through the Heterotrait-Monotrait ratio. Reliability was determined by estimating internal consistency through Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients. During exploratory factor analysis, item 9 was removed because its factor loading was less than 0.30, and the remaining 16 items were distributed across three factors: life disruption, socio-physical disruption, and memory disruption, which collectively explained 45% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated a good fit for the proposed model. All composite reliability, maximum reliability, and heterotrait-monotrait ratios supported the convergent and discriminant validity of the ERAQ. Additionally, Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients confirmed the acceptable internal consistency of the Farsi version of the ERAQ. Based on the findings of this study, the Farsi version of the ERAQ demonstrates sufficient validity and reliability to assess anxiety symptoms associated with ECT in the Iranian population.

Glottal Function Index and GRBAS Scale of Patients Undergoing Vocal Cord Medialization: A Series of Five Patients
 • Dec 1, 2013
 • Philippine Journal of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
 • Enrique C Papa + 2 more

Objectives: Vocal cord paralysis or immobility is a debilitating condition that may result from neural injury or mechanical fixation of the vocal cord (VC). When permanent, therapy is aimed at improving closure by modifying the position of the vocal cord. Whatever surgical intervention is chosen, pre - and post - operative voice evaluation is important. This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of the Glottal Function Index (GFI) and Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, Strain (GRBAS) Scale in the evaluation of treatment outcomes in patients with unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) who underwent medialization thyroplasty type 1 with a modified lock-in soft silicone implant. Methods: Study Design: Descriptive Case Series Setting: Tertiary Government Hospital Patients: Five Results: Five patients (3 females, 2 males) consulting due to hoarseness underwent rigid endoscopy. Four (2 right, 2 left) had unilateral paramedian VC paralysis while one had bilateral paresis with bowing of the left vocal cord. One of those with left VC paralysis was diagnosed as idiopathic; the four were iatrogenic (3 from thyroid surgery, 1 from multiple surgical procedures). All patients underwent medialization thyroplasty type 1 using locked-in soft silicone implant. The GFI and GRBAS scale were utilized for pre-operative and post-operative perceptual evaluation of voice. The GFI showed severe glottic insufficiency among all five patients prior to surgery with improvement of subjective symptoms one day and one week post-surgery in four patients. Likewise, the Hirano GRBAS scale showed improvement of voice quality and correlated well with the improvement of the patient’s subjective symptoms from the GFI scores. However, case 5 with bilateral vocal cord paresis, showed no improvement of voice quality despite recovery from subjective symptoms. Conclusion: For glottal insufficiency, perceptual voice evaluation using self-administered GFI and GRBAS scale assessment are important parameters in determining quality of life among patients with glottal insufficiency undergoing medialization laryngoplasty. Keywords: Hoarseness, unilateral vocal cord paralysis, medialization thyroplasty, Glottal Function Index, Hirano GRBAS Score

 • Jul 28, 2022
 • Frontiers in Public Health
 • Hamid Sharif Nia + 4 more

BackgroundAlzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and debilitating disorder that strongly affects people with AD and their families. The changes in signs of the disease and its treatment lead to many challenges in people with AD that affect the performance and the ability of caregivers, their social life, and physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of caregivers' health. Therefore, this study was designed to develop and validate the Care Challenge Scale (CCS) for family caregivers of people with AD in the care context of Iran.MethodThis is a cross-sectional study, and the primary scale was based on 14 semi-structured interviews with family caregivers of Iranian people with AD. In the next phase, the psychometric features were assessed, including the face validity (qualitative and quantitative), content validity (qualitative and quantitative), item analysis, structural validity (exploratory and confirmatory factors), and construct validity (convergent and discriminant validity). Finally, the reliability was assessed using internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega coefficient, and the average inter-item correlation), stability (intraclass correlation coefficient), and absolute reliability.ResultsTotally, 435 Iranian family caregivers filled out online questionnaires, with a mean age of 50.26(±13.24) years. Based on the results of the qualitative phase, an item pool was generated with 389 items, and after deleting overlapping and unrelated items, the CCS with 14 items was created. The results of the quantitative phase showed that the CCS consists of two factors with 10 items each, which are named effective role-play challenge and lack of social–financial support, and they explained 42.23% of the total variance. Furthermore, the results of confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fitness of the scale structure model, and it had convergent and discriminant validity. The reliability indexes showed this scale has internal consistency and stability.ConclusionThe most care challenge among Iranian family caregivers of people with AD is effective role-play challenges and lack of social–financial support. The scale as designed has good validity, internal consistency, and stability that can be used by therapists, nurses, and researchers for the assessment of the challenges of this population.

 • Takeharu Kanazawa + 10 more

Objective: Unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) not only induces severe dysphonia, but aspiration as well. Although laryngeal framework surgery is usually performed to treat this condition, the procedure is not tolerated by some patients. In the previous study, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) injections for vocal cord scarring and sulcus have been reported to provide favorable outcomes while being minimally invasive. In this study, the authors retrospectively investigated phonological outcomes after bFGF injection in patients with UVCP.Methods: This study was registered in University hospital Medical Information Network – Clinical Trials Registry (UMIN000019347). Nineteen patients with unilateral cord paralysis were treated with bFGF injection. The treatment regimen involved a single injection of 50 μg of bFGF into the muscle layer. More than six months after the injection, aerodynamic and acoustic outcomes were examined. Results: The voice handicap index, maximum phonation time, mean airflow rate, and pitch range improved significantly after injection of bFGF. No sex-related differences were observed in any phonological parameter. Conclusion: bFGF injection, an easy method and suitable as an office procedure, significantly improved the hoarseness caused by UVCP. It is expected to be widely adopted and effective adjunctive drugs, and procedures are anticipated to be developed.

 • Marta Pietraszek + 3 more

<b><br>Introduction:</b> The COMQ-12 questionnaire is a tool to assess the quality of life in patients with chronic otitis media in many countries. The questionnaire consists of 12 questions: seven relating to the severity of symptoms, two regarding the impact of the disease on lifestyle and work, two concerning the impact on the need for healthcare, and one is a general question. Each question is rated on a scale from 0 to 5.</br> <b><br>Aim:</b> To present the validation process and the final version of the Polish version of the COMQ-12 questionnaire.</br> <b><br>Material and methods:</b> The Polish version of the COMQ-12 questionnaire was prepared based on an independent translation of the English version by three physicians (two otolaryngology specialists and one physician in the process of specialization in otolaryngology). The questionnaire was validated in a study including 60 participants: 30 patients with chronic otitis media and 30 volunteers without a history of middle ear diseases or hearing disorders. Each participant was asked to complete the COMQ-12 questionnaire twice at an interval of 4 weeks apart. The internal consistency, reliability, and construct validity of the questionnaire were analyzed using Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients, Spearman's rho correlation coefficient, and the Mann-Whitney test, respectively.</br> <b><br>Results:</b> High internal consistency, reliability, and construct validity of the Polish version of the COMQ-12 questionnaire were shown in the course of statistical analysis. The overall internal consistency was 0.95 and 0.97 as assessed by Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients, respectively. Spearman's rho correlation coefficient was above 0.89 for each question. Statistically significant differences in the COMQ-12 total scores were obtained between patients with chronic otitis media and the control group.</br> <b><br>Conclusions:</b> The Polish version of the COMQ-12 questionnaire can be a valuable clinical tool for the assessment of the quality of life in patients suffering from chronic otitis media.</br&gt.

 • Videosurgery and Other Miniinvasive Techniques
 • H Volkan Kara + 5 more

IntroductionVideo-assisted mediastinal lymphadenectomy (VAMLA) is a valuable tool for invasive staging of the mediastinum. Unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) may occur in patients following VAMLA and may result in secretion retention within the lungs, atelectasis and associated infectious situations such as pneumonia. Minimally invasive injection laryngoplasty (ILP) is the treatment of choice in UVCP.AimTo evaluate the efficacy and success of acute minimally invasive injection laryngoplasty for patients with UVCP following VAMLA.Material and methodsPatients with the symptom of dysphonia following VAMLA were reviewed. All of the patients had UVCP according to the video laryngoscopy examination and had symptoms of aspiration and ineffective coughing. The Voice Handicap Index (VHI) questionnaire and maximum phonation time (MPT) were measured. Minimally invasive ILP was performed under general anesthesia with 1 cm of hyaluronic acid.ResultsThere were 525 consecutive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who underwent VAMLA. Five (0.95%) of the patients had UVCP and were suffering from aspiration during oral intake and ineffective coughing reflex. Maximum phonation time (MFT) was measured before and after ILP, and the results were 7.1 ±1.6 and 11.1 ±2.3 s, respectively (p < 001). The Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) score was 30.4 ±4.7 and 13.4 ±3.5 (p < 0.01), respectively. Patients underwent surgical lung resection. There was no morbidity or mortality.ConclusionsUnilateral vocal cord paralysis may occur as a complication of VAMLA. ILP may be an active tool for treating UVCP before anatomical lung resection to avoid potential morbidities. Successful management of this complication with multidisciplinary team work may encourage the use of VAMLA more frequently.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Dating Violence Questionnaire for Victimization and Perpetration (DVQ-VP) in a sample of the Ecuadorian population. The study included 819 participants (47% men and 53% women), consisting of Ecuadorian adolescents and university students. An instrumental design was employed for the linguistic adaptation, reliability, and convergent (AVE), discriminant (HTMT), and structural (CFI, TLI, and RMSEA) validation of the DVQ-VP. The construct validity and internal consistency of the instrument were assessed. Construct validity was analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), while internal consistency was evaluated using ordinal Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients. Additionally, a network analysis was conducted with the DVQ-VP items. The CFA results indicated that the DVQ-VP has a factorial structure consistent with the original theoretical model, with adequate fit indices (CFI > 990, TLI > 990, and RMSEA < 0.08 in both models of the DVQ-VP). The Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega values for the victimization and perpetration subscales were above .70, indicating good internal consistency. Additionally, the instrument proved to be sensitive in identifying different forms of dating violence. The findings support that the DVQ-VP demonstrated adequate levels of validity and reliability for assessing dating violence in a sample of Ecuadorian adolescents and university students. These results suggest that, within this specific context and population, the instrument can be a useful tool for identifying patterns of victimization and perpetration in dating relationships. Its application may contribute to early detection and the development of targeted interventions to reduce intimate partner violence among young people.

Revised thyroplasty: The importance of inner perichondrium dissection
 • Jan 1, 2014
 • Journal of Medical Sciences
 • Wan-Fu Su + 8 more

Purpose: The outcome of voice surgery on unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP) by medialization laryngoplasty (ML) was various although the series of reports consistently claimed that the phonation ability restored well after their reconstructive surgery. We revised several unsatisfactory subjects and proposed a correct concept to facilitate a successful surgery. Patients and Methods: One hundred and forty subjects suffering from UVCP and undergoing ML procedure were reviewed. Eight of the 140 subjects underwent revised thyroplasty to improve their unsatisfactory voice. The time elapse from UVCP onset to first ML procedure and between first and second ML procedure was recorded and analyzed. Maximal phonation time (MPT) was used to evaluate the improvement of phonation ability. Result: Inappropriate size or location of the implant material were defined in two subjects, inappropriate management of the inner perichondrium of thyroid lamina (IPTL) were defined in 5, and cricoarytenoid joint (CAJ) fixation in one. MPT was increased from 3 s to 11 s in average after revised surgery. MPT more than 10 s was obtained in 7 subjects in their followup at mean 15 months. Conclusion: The management of IPTL actually determined the voice surgical outcome significantly. Preoperative evaluation of the CAJ mobility was still an important factor to determine the use of corrective methods.
