Abstract

Background: Acute myocardial infarction often activates the sympathetic system and deactivates the vagal system. We investigated whether short term electrical vagal nerve stimulation during ischemia reperfusion(I/R) could ameliorate subsequent left ventricular dysfunction. Methods and Results: The I/R model was created in SD rats by ligating the left coronary arteryfor 30minutes, followed by reperfusion. We electrically stimulated the right vagal nerve (VNS: 5Hz, 1 msec rectanglar pulse) during I/R for 3hours.
