Abstract

The contribution of the vacuum polarization to the quadrupole moment of a heavy nucleus is considered. The leading term is obtained exactly in Zα, using the electron Green function in the Coulomb field. This term contains the large logarithm of the ratio λ R , where R is the radius of the nucleus. The spatial distributions of the induced charge and potential are discussed also.
