Abstract

Examples of quotations and paraphrases of V. Krychevsky and H. Narbut in graphic design of the Ukrainian diaspora from 1945–1989 are considered in this article. It has been found that these methods were connected with the belief in the “Ukrainian style” as a set of specific graphic elements and with the willingness to remind about the period of the Ukrainian State existence. Visual citations include reproductions of famous works, the use of selected fragments or motifs, while paraphrases demonstrate numerous individual interpretations. The above shows that the purpose of quotations and paraphrases in graphic design of the diaspora was to create new visual stories about the original source, so they did not hide, but in a peculiar way “remade” the well-known motives.
