Abstract

This paper is designed to introduce the possibility of using computer generated statistics in order to gain an increased understanding of the scope and content of a library collection. Librarians are under much pressure to cut costs while maintaining services. The State University of New York has studied the Higher Education Information System (HEGIS) collection analysis arrangement as a workable method of eliminating the purchase of unnecessary monographs. This article is intended primarily as a description of what HEGIS is. It is hoped that the reader may be inspired by some of the examples and observations presented to pursue the HEGIS concept as a possible collection development tool.
