Abstract

In 2010, The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) published Guidelines for Professional Registered Nurse Staffing for Perinatal Units to address the challenges of staffing in perinatal units. This quality improvement project was initiated with the goal of developing an electronic report within the electronic health record system to quantify registered nurse (RN) hourly staffing needs based on patient census and acuity. These data would then be analyzed to determine trends and RN staffing needs for each 24-hour period and each day of the week and identify staffing patterns to meet AWHONN’s staffing guidelines.
