Abstract

DRAP, Document Reading Activity Packets, was a direct outgrowth of a workshop at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. in June 1977. This is a shorter version of a longer, more detailed packet which included maps, charts, and other materials drawn from the National Archives collection. An imaginative teacher, with enough time, can easily design Document Reading Activity Packets to fit any subject area in the study of American History. This abbreviated learning package evolves around the Fort Washington Incident in the War of 1812 and the resulting court martial of Captain Samuel T. Dyson. This exercise is designed to stimulate students' interest in their own state histories as well as to stimulate their curiosity for further research. The sample readings are loaded with inaccuracies, incorrect factual material, and historical bias; consequently, the exercise becomes a good activity for the study of American historiography and shows that historians can make mistakes. Those inter ested in finding out more about the Fort Washington Incident, may contact the National Archives and ask for RG 157, General Court Martial File 0-5, Box 25.
