Abstract

Abstract The present study exploits a large accumulation of empirical data and knowledge on school effectiveness in science teaching and methodological advances in analyzing hierarchical data. It offers an indicator system for monitoring science education in Israel at the elementary school level and uses this system and a multi level methodology for analyzing hierarchical data and refining answers to traditional questions about school impact, school variables which explain variability in student achievement and about ‘successful’ and ‘unsuccessful’ schools.
