Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to learn whether, despite the history of neglect of aged in Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) planning and the impact of myths about old people on the clinicians' willingness to provide services to elderly clientele, older people can be helped at CMHCs. Help is defined as improvement in psychiatric functioning, mental status, and the social integration of their psychological components. The paper reviews conceptually the status of gerontological mental health during this era of increased emphasis on recognition of their needs and on the establishment of national policies regarding older people. As such, the paper focuses on a review of theoretical develop ments on aging.
