Abstract

Generalized formulation is presented for calculating simple eutectic type solid-liquid phase diagrams for binary and ternary systems by using the Wilson equation for molar excess Gibbs energy in the liquid phase. The liquidus surface and eutectic points of molten salt mixtures with a common ion were calculated and compared with experimental values. The average error in the estimation of ternary eutectic composition was ± 0.013 (mole fraction) for the two ternary systems tested. The agreement was generally better than that obtained with the regular solution approximation.
