Abstract

The correction of hallux valgus by Scarf osteotomy of the first metatarsal allows great versatility in covering many types of forefoot correction. It has strong fixation allowing early functional recovery, and long-term follow up confirms the reliability of the procedure. This osteotomy can also be combined with other osteotomies and soft tissue procedures. It is imperative that the surgeon determines pre and intra operatively the correction that has to be applied. It should be noted that this technique is not difficult but needs to be performed accurately.
