Abstract

Forty-six paramedics took part in this randomised crossover study. After a demonstration and one practice intubation, paramedics were asked to intubate the trachea of a manikin (Laerdal Airway Management Trainer) placed on the floor and set to simulate a grade three laryngeal view. A single-use bougie (Portex Tracheal Tube Introducer; SIMS Portex, UK) was available for use with the Mac laryngoscope. Recorded data included success rate, time to tracheal intubation, time to first ventilation with a self-inflating bag (Ambu, UK), paramedic’s impression of ease of use (0 cm extremely easy, 10 cm extremely difficult) and preference of laryngoscope. The Cochran Q test was used to analyse nominal data and Kruskal–Wallis and ANOVA were used to analyse interval scale data.
