Abstract

Injection of local anesthetic solutions into the thoracic paravertebral space will spread to adjacent segments and will produce a high quality ipsilateral afferent nerve block. This regional anesthetic technique, which dates back to the beginning of this century, is particularly useful for thoracic or abdominal surgical procedures using a unilateral incision, eg, thoracotomy, breast surgery, cholecystectomy, and renal surgery. By using a paravertebral technique a number of the risks and problems with epidural anesthesia techniques can be circumvented. The present communication delineates the use of paravertebral blockade in infants and children.
