Abstract

LiveCode allows people to easily create apps for Android, iOS, Mac OS X, and Windows. It uses a HyperCard stack metaphor for creating applications. The development interface allows students to easily drag controls from a palette and place them on cards. An open source version of LiveCode has recently become available and was used for this review. LiveCode has its own scripting language with a natural language syntax. The code is very compact. RunRev, a company responsible for most of the development of LiveCode, claims that the LiveCode scripting language is extremely easy for people without programming experience to learn. The use of LiveCode for instruction of mobile application development is compared with the use of Objective C/Xcode and Corona SDK. Primary focus of presentation is an initial assessment of the use of LiveCode in a CS0 course. LiveCode was used in this course because many students would like to write Apps for smartphones and tablets. This tool allows students to create apps that will run on both Android and iOS devices. Applications can be tested in a simulator before deploying to the student's mobile device.
