Abstract
In recent years, a trend towards computed tomography (CT) guided navigation has evolved to improve intraoperative accuracy during maxillofacial surgery. This modality allows the surgeon to link previously acquired imaging with clinical findings in the operating room in real time enabling a live three-dimensional map of the patients’ anatomy in relation to the surgical problem. The maxillofacial region presents a unique challenge with respect to surgical approaches and complex anatomy. The utility of dynamic imaging to aid in reducing surgical error is an area of great interest in the head and neck region. Advances in navigation-assisted surgery allow for its utilisation in several fields within maxillofacial surgery including oncology, trauma, pathology, orthognathic surgery, and implantology. This lecture will review the indications, surgical set up and uses of intraoperative CT guided navigation.
