Abstract

The dental clinical staff and students of Bristol Dental Hospital and School were surveyed for compliance with hospital advice that gloves should be worn at all times for all clinical work, and for their attitude towards the wearing of gloves. A compliance of over 85 per cent was found in those departments where exposure to blood was likely. Compliance was lowest at less than 50 per cent in Child Dental Health. Nevertheless, virtually all respondents felt that the use of gloves was advisable. The main perceived advantage of glove wearing was the prevention of cross-infection. The main disadvantages given were some discomfort and impaired dexterity when working with endodontic hand instruments. Patients' perceived acceptance of gloves was good.
