Abstract

A leading American researcher has moved from the University of California to Addenbrooke's Hospital in the UK in order that he can further his work using stem cells derived from human embryos. Roger Pederson will take up his appointment in Cambridge as a result of legalization of research using embryonic stem cells by the UK government. At the time of writing, federally funded work on human embryo-derived stem cells was prohibited in the USA. According to a report in the UK's Guardian newspaper in July, the research in Pedersen's lab was largely funded from private sources, but the federal government considered that Pedersen's use of university lighting, electricity and secretaries made his work public rather than private. Although recruitment of established American researchers to the UK is uncommon, the difference in regulation of such work might spark further such ‘scientific defections’. D.S.
