Abstract
The U.S. Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (U.S. JGOFS) is moving toward a fully operational phase in the early 1990s and has recommended 1990 research priorities. U.S. JGOFS is a program within the Global Geosciences Initiative of the National Science Foundation and is the U.S. component of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS), a standing committee of the Scientific Committee for Ocean Research (SCOR), and a core project of the International Geosphere Biosphere Program.The broad objective of U.S. JGOFS, to improve our understanding of the processes controlling the cycling of carbon and related biogenic elements in the oceans, has been articulated in detail in a series of reports. These reports are the product of several years of intense planning and are available through the U.S. JGOFS Planning and Coordination Office, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA 02543; tel. 508‐548‐1400, ext. 2834.
