Abstract

Abstract Previous clinicopathologic correlation between bacteriologic findings and anatomic lesions of the urinary tract in living subjects has been limited to studies of renal biopsies. Standardized cystoscopic examinations and quantitative urine cultures were performed in 124 patients to test the relationship between bacteriuria and urinary bladder lesions. High bacterial counts were accompanied by diffuse multiple nonspecific inflammatory changes and low counts by few or no findings except for specific underlying disease, such as benign prostatic hypertrophy or neoplasm.
