Abstract

1. 1. Urea, detected and measured with urease, has been shown to be a frequent constituent of the contents of the fowl's caeca and colon where it can occur in different concentrations. 2. 2. Incubation of caecal contents sometimes resulted in an increased concentration of urea pointing to its possible production by the caecal flora. 3. 3. Volatile fatty acids and ammonia were found in both caeca and colon; the concentrations of acid and base were usually muhc higher in the caeca. Uric acid could not be detected in the caeca. 4. 4. Possible sources of intestinal urea are discussed with special reference to the retroperistaltic movement of urine from the cloaca.
