Abstract

A charnockitic paragneiss from the In'Ouzzal (Ahaggar, Algeria) Formation was studied using the U-Th-Pb zircon technique. Analysis with 1-mg samples gives an upper intercept of 2.17 b.y. on the U-Pb concordia diagram. A grain-by-grain study allows one to distinguish two zircon populations: yellow, euhedral zircons give an age of 2.05 b.y., and brown, corroded zircons give an age of 2.9–3.3 b.y. in agreement with Rb-Sr whole rock data. Some consequences of these results are discussed, including: (1) U-Th-Pb evolution of inherited zircons, with multistages models, and (2) comparison of U-Pb and Rb-Sr data in granulite facies environment.
