Abstract

This paper deals with the linguistic analysis of material excerpted from the story “Slikaˮ, which is an integral part of the collection entitled Priče iz hiljadu i jedne noći. The use of comma as a punctuation mark, which is the bearer of stylistic effects in the context of the story is analyzed. Sijarić uses commas in various ways, which leads to the conclusion that his oral speech is closely connected with its written form. Therefore, at times, Sijarić’s text gives the impression of spontaneity, which can be seen as a result of his current thoughts and the way of speaking. The author uses commas to emphasize contextually important parts of the text, to replace independent clauses conjunctions forming asyndetic syntactic structures, to replace other punctuation marks, to separate nouns in the vocative case, to indicate inversion, and as a strong stylistic device emphasizing the qualitative characteristics of the described person and/or object. The analysis of the material has shown that the use of comma as a punctuation mark is justified.
