Artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative advancements across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. However, a pressing ethical challenge remains: aligning AI systems with human values in a manner that is stable, coherent, and universally applicable. As AI increasingly mediates human perception, shapes social interactions, and influences decision-making, it raises profound ethical concerns about its impact on human dignity and social well-being. The prevailing consensus-based approach, advocated by figures such as Google DeepMind’s Iason Gabriel, suggests that AI ethics should reflect majority societal or political viewpoints. While this model offers flexibility, it also risks moral relativism and ethical instability as social norms fluctuate.This paper argues that consensus-based ethics are inadequate for safeguarding fundamental values—especially human dignity—which should not be subject to shifting public opinion. Instead, it advocates for a moral framework that transcends cultural and political trends, providing a stable foundation for AI ethics. Through case studies like social media recommendation algorithms that exploit users’ vulnerabilities, particularly those of children and teenagers, the paper highlights the risks of AI systems driven by profit-oriented metrics without ethical oversight. Drawing on insights from moral philosophy and theology, particularly the works of Joseph Ratzinger, it contends that aligning AI with moral reasoning is essential to uphold human dignity, prevent texploitation, and promote the common good.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has raised more ethical concerns than ever before, particularly with autonomous decision-making systems. Even more modern AI systems can carry out growingly intricate work with fewer human interventions, putting into doubt accountability, fairness, transparency, and the ethical consequences of the machine-directed decision. Though important literature has been done concerning AI ethics in terms of technical, legal, and philosophical frameworks, the inclusion of human and spiritual values within the framework of AI judgments is currently a critical gap. The ethical consideration of human values, such as empathy, justice, and human dignity, are fundamental aspects of human consideration, but their implementation in the algorithmic systems is scarce. Spiritual values, which include moral principles based on various cultural, religious, and philosophical traditions, provide another complementary aspect to the control of AI behaviour, to make sure that autonomous systems are in line with the expectations of morality and ethical propriety of society. The paper aims to analyse how human and spiritual values can be integrated in a legal and policy framework to develop ethical AI. The research uses an interdisciplinary methodology by taking the perspectives of philosophy, theology, computer science, and law to theorise a model where-by the making of ethical decisions can be integrated within AI systems. The study relies on the literature on AI ethics, human centred design, and legal governance to determine the existing gaps and challenges when it comes to the translation of abstract ethical principles into computational mechanisms. There are case studies in the fields of autonomous vehicles, healthcare, and law enforcement that are examined to demonstrate the potential of the involvement of moral and spiritual considerations in AI algorithms, as well as their limitations. Some of the major research questions that were used to guide this research include: How do we operationalize human and spiritual values in AI systems? How can legal and policy processes be used to guarantee adherence to ethical standards? How far can AI systems be programmed to incorporate cross-cultural ethics at the expense of technical effectiveness? Answering these questions, the paper helps to develop a more comprehensive view of AI ethics, which is not limited to technical or utilitarian methods. The results serve as an additional indication that making AI human and spiritual is not just an imaginary task but a viable requirement to adjust technology to the standards and rules of society, as well as the expectations of the ethical framework. Some of the operationalisation strategies of ethical principles are the development of value-sensitive algorithms, ethical compliance regulatory guidelines, and interdisciplinary oversight mechanisms. Additionally, the paper identifies the possible obstacles, including cultural pluralism, interpretative ambiguities of moral codes, and technical constraints of algorithm design, which should be resolved to accomplish successful integration.

AI Ethics Impact Assessment based on Requirement Engineering

This paper proposes a methodology for evaluating the ethical impact of artificial intelligence (AI) systems on people and society based on AI ethics guidelines. The ethical impact of AI has been recognized as a social issue, and countries and organizations have formulated principles and guidelines on AI ethics, and laws and regulations will be enforced in Europe. Because these principles and guidelines are written in terms of philosophy and law, AI service providers, developers, and business users have the challenge of how they should practice the principles and guidelines to their AI systems. To address this challenge, we first analyzed cases of ethical problems caused by AI in the past and assumed that ethical problems could be linked to interactions between components of AI systems and stakeholders related to such systems. On the basis of this assumption, we then developed a methodology to comprehensively extract the ethical risks that an AI system poses. This methodology consists of two approaches. The first approach is to develop an AI ethics model that embodies ethics guidelines as necessary requirements for ethical AI systems and correlates these requirements with interactions. The second approach is an impact assessment process that uses the AI ethics models to extract ethical risks for individual AI systems. In this paper, we discuss the details of this methodology and show the results of an initial validation to verify the above assumption and the ease of the impact assessment process.

Moral consideration of nonhumans in the ethics of artificial intelligence

This paper argues that the field of artificial intelligence (AI) ethics needs to give more attention to the values and interests of nonhumans such as other biological species and the AI itself. It documents the extent of current attention to nonhumans in AI ethics as found in academic research, statements of ethics principles, and select projects to design, build, apply, and govern AI. It finds that the field of AI ethics gives limited and inconsistent attention to nonhumans, with the main activity being a line of research on the moral status of AI. The paper argues that nonhumans merit moral consideration, meaning that they should be actively valued for their own sake and not ignored or valued just for how they might benefit humans. Finally, it explains implications of moral consideration of nonhumans for AI ethics research and practice, including for the content of AI ethics principles, the selection of AI projects, the accounting of inadvertent effects of AI systems such as via their resource and energy consumption and potentially certain algorithmic biases, and the research challenge of incorporating nonhuman interests and values into AI system design. The paper does not take positions on which nonhumans to morally consider or how to balance the interests and values of humans vs. nonhumans. Instead, the paper makes the more basic argument that the field of AI ethics should move from its current state of affairs, in which nonhumans are usually ignored, to a state in which nonhumans are given more consistent and extensive moral consideration.

It is important to appreciate the major ethical dimensions of AI and how they impact AI systems. Policies and guidelines needs to be laid out for development and usage of such systems. Automated Decisions/Responsibility: No matter how intelligent a AI system might perceived to be, it is always prone to making errors. So, AI system that make automated decisions will always be dangerous. Therefore, it is important to ensure that there is always "human intervention" or "human review" for outcomes/decisions made by AI systems. Determining accountability for AI-generated actions or content remains a significant challenge, emphasizing the need for ethical governance frameworks. There has to be human accountability.Fairness/Bias: AI systems can perpetuate existing biases present in training data, leading to discriminatory outcomes.Transparency: The opaque nature of many AI algorithms complicates accountability, making it difficult to understand decision-making processes.Privacy: AI's capability to process vast datasets can infringe on individual privacy rights, necessitating stringent data protection measuresHuman Dignity: The risk of AI-generated content resembling existing works raises ethical issues regarding originality and authorship.

Broadening AI Ethics Narratives: An Indic Art View

Incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives is seen as an essential step towards enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) ethics. In this regard, the field of arts is perceived to play a key role in elucidating diverse historical and cultural narratives, serving as a bridge across research communities. Most of the works that examine the interplay between the field of arts and AI ethics concern digital artworks, largely exploring the potential of computational tools in being able to surface biases in AI systems. In this paper, we investigate a complementary direction--that of uncovering the unique socio-cultural perspectives embedded in human-made art, which in turn, can be valuable in expanding the horizon of AI ethics. Through semi-structured interviews across sixteen artists, art scholars, and researchers of diverse Indian art forms like music, sculpture, painting, floor drawings, dance, etc., we explore how {\it non-Western} ethical abstractions, methods of learning, and participatory practices observed in Indian arts, one of the most ancient yet perpetual and influential art traditions, can shed light on aspects related to ethical AI systems. Through a case study concerning the Indian dance system (i.e. the {\it `Natyashastra'}), we analyze potential pathways towards enhancing ethics in AI systems. Insights from our study outline the need for (1) incorporating empathy in ethical AI algorithms, (2) integrating multimodal data formats for ethical AI system design and development, (3) viewing AI ethics as a dynamic, diverse, cumulative, and shared process rather than as a static, self-contained framework to facilitate adaptability without annihilation of values (4) consistent life-long learning to enhance AI accountability

A Deployment Model to Extend Ethically Aligned AI Implementation Method ECCOLA

There is a struggle in Artificial intelligence (AI) ethics to gain ground in actionable methods and models to be utilized by practitioners while developing and implementing ethically sound AI systems. AI ethics is a vague concept without a consensus of definition or theoretical grounding and bearing little connection to practice. Practice involving primarily technical tasks like software development is not aptly equipped to process and decide upon ethical considerations. Efforts to create tools and guidelines to help people working with AI development have been concentrating almost solely on the technical aspects of AI. A few exceptions do apply, such as the ECCOLA method for creating ethically aligned AI -systems. ECCOLA has proven results in terms of increased ethical considerations in AI systems development. Yet, it is a novel innovation, and room for development still exists. This study aims to extend ECCOLA with a deployment model to drive the adoption of ECCOLA, as any method, no matter how good, is of no value without adoption and use. The model includes simple metrics to facilitate the communication of ethical gaps or outcomes of ethical AI development. It offers the opportunity to assess any AI system at any given lifecycle phase, e.g., opening possibilities like analyzing the ethicality of an AI system under acquisition.

Lessons Learned from Assessing Trustworthy AI in Practice

Building artificial intelligence (AI) systems that adhere to ethical standards is a complex problem. Even though a multitude of guidelines for the design and development of such trustworthy AI systems exist, these guidelines focus on high-level and abstract requirements for AI systems, and it is often very difficult to assess if a specific system fulfills these requirements. The Z-Inspection® process provides a holistic and dynamic framework to evaluate the trustworthiness of specific AI systems at different stages of the AI lifecycle, including intended use, design, and development. It focuses, in particular, on the discussion and identification of ethical issues and tensions through the analysis of socio-technical scenarios and a requirement-based framework for ethical and trustworthy AI. This article is a methodological reflection on the Z-Inspection® process. We illustrate how high-level guidelines for ethical and trustworthy AI can be applied in practice and provide insights for both AI researchers and AI practitioners. We share the lessons learned from conducting a series of independent assessments to evaluate the trustworthiness of real-world AI systems, as well as key recommendations and practical suggestions on how to ensure a rigorous trustworthiness assessment throughout the lifecycle of an AI system. The results presented in this article are based on our assessments of AI systems in the healthcare sector and environmental monitoring, where we used the framework for trustworthy AI proposed in the Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI by the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on AI. However, the assessment process and the lessons learned can be adapted to other domains and include additional frameworks.

As AI technologies become deeply embedded in decision-making processes, the risks of ethical violations, bias, lack of transparency, and accountability have intensified. While AI promises significant improvements in efficiency, innovation, and strategic agility, these benefits can only be realized within a robust ethical and governance framework. This paper explores how corporate governance can be strategically aligned with AI ethics to promote responsible innovation and uphold societal trust. The research delves into the intersection of governance structures, ethical principles, and AI applications to propose a comprehensive strategic framework that ensures ethical decision-making in business. It examines the roles and responsibilities of boards of directors, executive leadership, and key stakeholders in fostering an ethical AI culture. Emphasis is placed on principles such as transparency, accountability, fairness, privacy, and inclusivity, all of which are essential to maintain corporate integrity and public confidence. This study employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating insights from corporate governance theory, ethical philosophy, AI regulatory policies, and business case studies. The paper also investigates existing challenges businesses face in implementing AI ethically, including regulatory ambiguity, insufficient oversight mechanisms, and potential conflicts of interest. Ultimately, this paper offers strategic recommendations for integrating AI ethics into corporate governance frameworks, including the adoption of ethical guidelines, establishment of AI ethics committees, continuous training for employees, and fostering stakeholder engagement. These measures aim to ensure that organizations not only comply with legal standards but also go beyond compliance to embrace ethical leadership in the age of AI. By presenting a robust strategic framework, this research contributes to ongoing discussions on ethical AI and responsible corporate governance, encouraging businesses to adopt proactive, transparent, and inclusive strategies that align technological innovation with societal values.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has made incredible strides in several fields, revolutionising business and everyday life. Thoughts regarding the moral ramifications and fairness of AI systems have grown in prominence along with its fast development. This article explores the crucial issues of AI fairness and ethics, concentrating on ways to detect and reduce prejudice in AI systems while also discussing larger ethical implications. The paper emphasises the possible repercussions of biased decision-making while highlighting the many forms and sources of bias that might develop in AI models. There are several methods and strategies to deal with bias in AI systems, including data pretreatment, algorithmic changes, and transparency measures. In an effort to balance justice and efficacy, the trade-offs between fairness goals and overall model performance are examined. The article also emphasises how crucial it is for AI systems to be transparent and understandable in order to foster accountability. For the purpose of establishing ethical AI development and deployment practises, regulatory issues and ethical decision-making frameworks are also investigated. This study emphasises the need of ongoing research and development of moral AI systems to guarantee a just and equitable future for AI applications via in-depth analysis and case studies.

E-commerce data security is influenced by the three elements; Explainable AI (XAI), Federated Learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics. The objective of Explainable AI is to enhance the transparency of AI systems and their explainability to promote human oversight and foster confidence. Federated Learning (FL) provides a decentralized approach by training Machine Learning (ML) models to secure user data confidentiality and privacy. Instead of exchanging local data, model constraints from local ML models are pooled and shared as a method of collaborative learning among devices and organizations. The bias, fairness, and the effects on society are a few moral issues surrounding the use of AI covered in AI Ethics. It discusses moral regulations, guidelines, and policies that support the development and application of moral AI. This chapter aims to give insight into the technological and ethical aspects of AI advances concerning AI-ML for data security in E-Commerce, with a focus on the importance of privacy, accountability, and transparency in AI systems.

The Switch, the Ladder, and the Matrix: Models for Classifying AI Systems

Organisations that design and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) systems increasingly commit themselves to high-level, ethical principles. However, there still exists a gap between principles and practices in AI ethics. One major obstacle organisations face when attempting to operationalise AI Ethics is the lack of a well-defined material scope. Put differently, the question to which systems and processes AI ethics principles ought to apply remains unanswered. Of course, there exists no universally accepted definition of AI, and different systems pose different ethical challenges. Nevertheless, pragmatic problem-solving demands that things should be sorted so that their grouping will promote successful actions for some specific end. In this article, we review and compare previous attempts to classify AI systems for the purpose of implementing AI governance in practice. We find that attempts to classify AI systems proposed in previous literature use one of three mental models: the Switch, i.e., a binary approach according to which systems either are or are not considered AI systems depending on their characteristics; the Ladder, i.e., a risk-based approach that classifies systems according to the ethical risks they pose; and the Matrix, i.e., a multi-dimensional classification of systems that take various aspects into account, such as context, input data, and decision-model. Each of these models for classifying AI systems comes with its own set of strengths and weaknesses. By conceptualising different ways of classifying AI systems into simple mental models, we hope to provide organisations that design, deploy, or regulate AI systems with the vocabulary needed to demarcate the material scope of their AI governance frameworks.

The ethical adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) remains a valuable investment for business and society, irrespective of the state of the world; therefore, organizations should maintain a strong focus on ethics in the AI deployment process. This study reviews the ethical use of AI in business to address critical issues of data privacy, bias, and accountability, even though there are no standardized guidelines for the ethical application of AI. The research further identifies key ethical opportunities for best practice adoption and destination in ethical AI through a review of the literature and case study analysis of top organizations- IBM, Google DeepMind, and Accenture. Studies have revealed the likelihood of worsening socioeconomic inequalities; hence, there is a need for human-centered designs in AI systems. The implications of this study are to improve trust and reputation in organizations by prioritizing ethical considerations as well as identifying bias and inequality in the use of AI Algorithms, which should be reduced by organizations to avoid inequalities. With more focus now on AI ethics, businesses should implement AI frameworks in compliance with the emerging regulations. To ensure long-term sustainability, organizations should adopt ethics with innovation. Organizations can practice informed decision-making by applying transparency and accountability in the usage of the AI framework and gain a competitive advantage in the global market. The study aims to equip decision-makers with actionable approaches to ensure AI systems are fair, accountable, and aligned with societal values for a sustainable and socially beneficial AI adoption across industries. Future research should focus on the societal impacts of AI and why ethical cross-cultural perspectives are needed concerning AI governance. It advocates ethical AI as an asset for businesses as well as society at large.

This article delves into real-world case studies of AI failures and near-misses, offering tangible insights into the potential consequences of unchecked AI growth. It also explores strategies for mitigating these risks, balancing the pursuit of innovation with the need for transparency, accountability, and ethical oversight. As we look to the future, international cooperation and robust regulatory frameworks are essential to managing AI’s growing influence. By examining both technical and ethical dimensions, this article equips readers with a comprehensive understanding of AI security and safety, urging a proactive approach to managing the risks and harnessing the potential of this powerful technology.
