Update in posterior cortical atrophy

Abstract

Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare neurodegenerative syndrome that primarily affects the parietal and occipital lobes and is typified by striking early deficits in higher visuospatial processing, numeracy and literacy. In this talk we will review recent developments in the clinical, cognitive, imaging, pathological and genetic characterisation of the syndrome. Linked to recent increased interest in biological subtypes of AD, we will also consider heterogeneity within the PCA syndrome and overlap with related clincial presentations, and the broad notion of PCA as an extreme point in a continuum of phenotypical variation. Finally we will examine the changing and distinctive care, management and support needs of those living with PCA and look at promising non-pharmarcological interventions and strategies.
