This study aims to explore the efforts of students from the Community Service Program (KKN) at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) in fostering religious moderation and tolerance in Besadi Village through the Creative Arts Festival (Gebyar Kreasi dan Seni). Religious moderation is seen as a crucial foundation for building a harmonious community amidst religious and cultural diversity. KKN students act as agents of social change, introducing the values of religious moderation through creative activities such as art performances, cultural competitions, and interfaith dialogues, presented in an educational and inclusive manner. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, collecting data through interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The results indicate that the Creative Arts Festival (Gebyar Kreasi dan Seni) successfully raised awareness among the Besadi Village community about the importance of religious moderation and strengthened tolerance among residents. This activity also served as an effective means of strengthening social ties between residents through diverse artistic and cultural expressions. However, challenges such as differing views and a lack of community participation still require attention. This research is expected to serve as a reference in developing diverse moderation programs based on arts and cultural activities in rural areas.

  • Ahmad Hermawan + 1 more

This study aims to examine the role of religious moderation in shaping interfaith relations in Indonesia and Malaysia. The research investigates how state policies and community-based initiatives contribute to social harmony and interfaith cooperation. It also seeks to identify the challenges each country faces in promoting religious moderation and its impact on Muslim-Christian interactions. The research employs a qualitative comparative approach, incorporating in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and focus group discussions with religious leaders, government officials, and interfaith activists. Data collection was conducted in key regions with diverse religious populations, including Yogyakarta and Surabaya in Indonesia, as well as Kuala Lumpur and Selangor in Malaysia. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in religious moderation practices and their influence on interfaith harmony. The study finds that Malaysia’s religious moderation is actively supported by government policies, resulting in a more structured and dynamic interfaith environment. The National Unity Blueprint and other pluralism-oriented initiatives have contributed to stronger cooperation among religious communities. In contrast, Indonesia’s religious moderation efforts remain largely formal and symbolic, facing cultural resistance, particularly in rural areas. Limited local government support and socio-historical tensions further hinder effective interfaith engagement in Indonesia. The findings underscore the importance of government involvement in shaping interfaith harmony. The study suggests that Indonesia could benefit from adopting a more structured approach to religious moderation, integrating state-backed policies with grassroots engagement. The research also highlights the role of religious education and interfaith dialogue in reducing social tensions and fostering inclusive religious pluralism. This research contributes a novel comparative perspective on religious moderation by systematically analyzing policies and their social impact in two multicultural nations. Unlike previous studies that focus solely on qualitative descriptions, this study incorporates empirical insights into the effectiveness of religious moderation policies in fostering interfaith harmony. The findings provide valuable recommendations for policymakers and religious leaders in designing more effective pluralism strategies to enhance interfaith cooperation.

  • Multidisciplinary Indonesian Center Journal (MICJO)
  • Abdul Hafith + 2 more

Religious moderation serves as a fundamental principle in the context of public service in Indonesia, where religious, cultural, and ethnic diversity demands fair, inclusive, and civilized governance. This study aims to analyze the role of religious moderation in public service policy in Indonesia, particularly in bridging the relationship between bureaucratic neutrality and social harmony within a multicultural society. To date, studies on religious moderation have largely focused on education and interfaith dialogue, while the dimensions of public policy and bureaucratic culture remain underexplored. Using a qualitative approach through policy analysis and literature review, this research examines how the values of religious moderation tawasuth (balance), tasamuh (tolerance), ‘adl (justice), and musawah (equality) can be integrated into an inclusive, fair, and ethical public service system. The findings indicate that the internalization of moderation values within public policy can strengthen governmental ethics, enhance public trust, and reinforce social cohesion amid diversity. This study also proposes a conceptual model called Moderation-Based Public Service Governance (MBPSG) as a new framework for public service management grounded in the values of religious moderation, balancing administrative efficiency with social justice.

From Policy to Pedagogy: Religious Moderation as a Counter-Radicalization Strategy in Islamic Education — A Systematic Literature Review
  • Oct 10, 2025
  • Jurnal Pendidikan Islam
  • Gatot Prasetyo + 2 more

Purpose – This study maps current evidence on religious moderation in Islamic Education in Indonesia to assess the effectiveness of policy, curriculum, pedagogy, and the institutional ecosystem—framed by Pancasila—as a counter-radicalization strategy and a shaper of inclusive character. Design/methods/approach – Systematic Literature Review (SLR) grounded in Kitchenham & Charters. Scopus search (February 12, 2025) using TITLE-ABS-KEY("religious" AND "moderation"), period 2018–2025, document type article. 754 articles found; 127 filtered as relevant; 72 fully reviewed; 2 excluded (review-based); 70 analyzed through qualitative content analysis (mechanical and interpretive stages) following the PRISMA scheme. Findings – Implementation of moderation is effective when wasathiyah values are integrated across subjects and practiced through dialogic methods (problem solving, inquiry, discussion), an integrative curriculum, and educator involvement. As a counter-radicalization strategy, effectiveness is supported by firm campus policies framed by Pancasila, the strengthening of national values (tawassuth, tawazun, i‘tidal, al-wathaniyah), and the role of madrasahs and universities as agents of social change. Key factors include school leadership, an inclusive curriculum, interfaith dialogue, and directed use of technology (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge [TPACK]). These findings sequentially answer RQ1–RQ4 (curriculum implementation; counter-radicalization strategies; contributions of empirical approaches; the role of higher education). Research implications – Recommendations include the standardization of moderation competencies in the Islamic Religious Education (PAI)/higher-education curriculum; the design of dialogic pedagogy grounded in experiential learning and inclusive social projects; capacity building for educators and digital literacy (TPACK); and institutional policies that synergize mentoring, intra/extracurricular activities, anti-radicalization governance, and curation of the educational digital ecosystem.

This article examines the importance of interfaith dialogue as a form of implementing religious moderation in the living space of modern society which is marked by the existence of social media. Dialogue between religions in order to build harmony that leads to peace and brotherhood is a must. Therefore, to achieve this the basic principle of maintaining ukhuwwah (brotherhood) is the key. Interfaith dialogue is not only important to be carried out face to face, but advances in technology have the opportunity to more easily interact via virtual with other religions to sow harmony. This article was written using a qualitative approach and using library research steps by placing books and journals as primary data, as well as writing from websites as supporting data. This article finds the conclusion that interfaith dialogue in multi-religious Indonesia is something that needs to be built in various spaces, including social media. The large diversity of religions has the potential to cause friction/conflict, but if the values of moderation are implemented properly by consistently building dialogue for the progress of the nation and harmony will avoid destruction. Other efforts that can be applied in the modern era are building moderate narratives on social media, building creative content, collaborating and continuing. Then later it will lead to harmony, equality, balance, peace, and away from tension.
