Abstract
In this paper is investigated the applicability of Linear Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) to fracture in notched adhesive joints. The notches considered were straight edge cracks and semi-elliptic surface cracks. The joints were loaded in four point bending. Two criteria, one local and one global, were used to evaluate the test results. Due to scatter it is rather difficult to conclude which criterion has greater merit. However, it was a reasonable agreement between the average test result for the straight edge crack and the averages of the results obtained using the local and global approaches on the semi-elliptic test data.
