Abstract

Unoccupied electronic states of antiferro- and ferromagnetic Cu 2Sb type intermetallic compounds have been studied by vacuum ultraviolet inverse photoemission spectroscopy (VUV-IPES). It is found that the magnetically nonequivalent sites, M(I) and M(II), provide different spectral features. The Mn(I) 3 d state shows only a step like spectral shape as revealed in MnAlGe, whereas the Mn(II) 3 d state in Mn 2As shows a peak about 2.0 eV above the Fermi level ( E F ). Cr 2As and Fe 2As have shown a qualitatively similar peak as in Mn 2As. These inverse photoemission spectra are compared with the photoemission spectra and the exchange splitting is evaluated. The experimental results are discussed in comparison with the results of band calculations.
