Abstract

Several relations among elastic properties, density, and mean atomic weight are examined on the basis of experimental data now available for oxides and silicates. Although the relations of Birch ( V p = a+ bρ), O. Anderson-Nafe ( ln K = A ln 2 m/ρ+C ), and D. Anderson ( ρ = A mΦ n ) are useful for the geophysical interpretation of the Earth and other planets, there are many exceptions and none of the relations appears to have general validity.
