Abstract

This article provides a synopsis of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Scheme in science and mathematics education in southern Africa. It examines the possible impact of the “brain-drain” phenomenon and sketches the successes and failures that have attended efforts (including the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Scheme) directed at capacity building in science and technology in the subregion in the past three decades. Next, the investigation considers some of the obstacles standing in the way of the Scheme as a means to capacity development in science and technology. Finally, the study concludes by raising pertinent issues, warranting further investigation of the Scheme. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Sci Ed84:401–417, 2000.
