As we saw in Chap. 8, when V is a finite-dimensional vector space over \({\mathbb {F}}\), then a linear mapping \(T:V\rightarrow V\) is semisimple if and only if its eigenvalues lie in \({\mathbb {F}}\) and its minimal polynomial has only simple roots. It would be useful to have a result that would allow one to predict that T is semisimple on the basis of a criterion that is simpler than finding the minimal polynomial, which, after all, requires knowing the roots of the characteristic polynomial.

There are three conditions for a topological space to be said a topological manifold of dimension : Hausdorff space, second-countable, and the existence of homeomorphism of a neighborhood of each point to an open subset of or -dimensional locally Euclidean. The differentiable structure is given if the intersection of two charts is an empty chart or its transition map is differentiable. In this article, we study a differentiable manifold on finite dimensional real vector spaces. The aim is to prove that any finite-dimensional vector space is a differentiable manifold. First of all, it is proved that a finite dimensional vector space is a topological manifold by constructing a norm as its topology. Given a metric which is induced by a norm. Two norms on a finite dimensional vector space are always equivalent and they are determine the same topology. Secondly, it is proved that the transition map in the finite dimensional vector space is differentiable. As conclusion, we have that any finite dimensional vector space with independent norm topology choice is a differentiable manifold. As a matter of discussion, it can be studied that the vector space of all linear operators of a finite dimensional vector space has a differentiable manifold structure as well.

This goal of this chapter is to find finitely many canonical representatives of each similarity class of square matrices with entries in a field and correspondingly of each isomorphism class of linear maps from a finite-dimensional vector space to itself.Section 1 frames the problem in more detail. Section 2 develops the theory of determinants over a commutative ring with identity in order to be able to work easily with characteristic polynomials det(?I — A). The discussion is built around the principle of "permanence of identities," which allows for passage from certain identities with integer coefficients to identities with coefficients in the ring in question.Section 3 introduces the minimal polynomial of a square matrix or linear map. The Cayley-Hamilton Theorem establishes that such a matrix satisfies its characteristic equation, and it follows that the minimal polynomial divides the characteristic polynomial. It is proved that a matrix is similar to a diagonal matrix if and only if its minimal polynomial is the product of distinct factors of degree 1. In combination with the fact that two diagonal matrices are similar if and only if their diagonal entries are permutations of one another, this result solves the canonical-form problem for matrices whose minimal polynomial is the product of distinct factors of degree 1.Section 4 introduces general projection operators from a vector space to itself and relates them to vector-space direct-sum decompositions with finitely many summands. The summands of a directsum decomposition are invariant under a linear map if and only if the linear map commutes with each of the projections associated to the direct-sum decomposition.Section 5 concerns the Primary Decomposition Theorem, whose subject is the operation of a linear map L: V ? V with V finite-dimensional. The statement is that if L has minimal polynomial \( P_1 (\lambda )^{l_1 } \cdots P_k (\lambda )^{l_k } \) with the Pj (?) distinct monic prime, then V has a unique direct-sum decomposition in which the respective summands are the kernels of the linear maps \( P_j (L)^{l_j } \), and moreover the minimal polynomial of the restriction of L to the j th summand is \( P_j (\lambda )^{l_j } \).Sections 6–7 concern Jordan canonical form. For the case that the prime factors of the minimal polynomial of a square matrix all have degree 1, the main theorem gives a canonical form under similarity, saying that a given matrix is similar to one in "Jordan form" and that the Jordan form is completely determined up to permutation of the constituent blocks. The theorem applies to all square matrices if the field is algebraically closed, as is the case for C. The theorem is stated and proved in Section 6, and Section 7 shows how to make computations in two different ways.

The Primary Decomposition Theorem shows that for a linear mapping f on a finite-dimensional vector space V there is a basis of V with respect to which f can be represented by a block diagonal matrix. As we have seen, in the special situation where the minimum polynomial of f is a product of distinct linear factors, this matrix is diagonal. We now turn our attention to a slightly more general situation, namely that in which the minimum polynomial of f factorises as a product of linear factors that are not necessarily distinct, i.e. is of the form $$ {m_f} = \mathop \Pi \limits_{i = 1}^k {(X - {\lambda _i})^{ei}} $$ where each e i ≥ 1. This, of course, is always the case when the ground field is ℂ, so the results we shall establish will be valid for all linear mappings on a finite-dimensional complex vector space. To let the cat out of the bag, our specific objective is to show that when the minimum polynomial of f factorises completely there is a basis of V with respect to which the matrix of f is triangular. We recall that a matrix A = [aij] n×n is (upper) triangular if a ij = 0 whenever i > j.

Piecewise Linear Economic-Mathematical Models with Regard to Unaccounted Factors Influence in 3-Dimensional Vector Space Azad Gabil oglu Aliyev Abstract For the last 15 years in periodic literature there has appeared a series of scientific publications that has laid the foundation of a new scientific direction on creation of piecewise-linear economic-mathematical models at uncertainty conditions in finite dimensional vector space. Representation of economic processes in finitedimensional vector space, in particular in Euclidean space, at uncertainty conditions in the form of mathematical models in connected with complexity of complete account of such important issues as: spatial in homogeneity of occurring economic processes, incomplete macro, micro and social-political information; time changeability of multifactor economic indices, their duration and their change rate. The above-listed one in mathematical plan reduces the solution of the given problem to creation of very complicated economicmathematical models of nonlinear type. In this connection, it was established in these works that all possible economic processes considered with regard to uncertainty factor in finite-dimensional vector space should be explicitly determined in spatial-time aspect. Owing only to the stated principle of spatial-time certainty of economic process at uncertainty conditions in finite dimensional vector space it is possible to reveal systematically the dynamics and structure of the occurring process. In addition, imposing a series of softened additional conditions on the occurring economic process, it is possible to classify it in finite-dimensional vector space and also to suggest a new science-based method of multivariate prediction of economic process and its control in finite-dimensional vector space at uncertainty conditions, in particular, with regard to unaccounted factors influence. This chapter investigates the effects of adding the additional structure of an inner product to a finite-dimensional real or complex vector space. Section 1 concerns the effect on the vector space itself, defining inner products and their corresponding norms and giving a number of examples and formulas for the computation of norms. Vector-space bases that are orthonormal play a special role. Section 2 concerns the effect on linear maps. The inner product makes itself felt partly through the notion of the adjoint of a linear map. The section pays special attention to linear maps that are self-adjoint, i.e., are equal to their own adjoints, and to those that are unitary, i.e., preserve norms of vectors. Section 3 proves the Spectral Theorem for self-adjoint linear maps on finite-dimensional inner-product spaces. The theorem says in part that any self-adjoint linear map has an orthonormal basis of eigenvectors. The Spectral Theorem has several important consequences, one of which is the existence of a unique positive semidefinite square root for any positive semidefinite linear map. The section concludes with the polar decomposition, showing that any linear map factors as the product of a unitary linear map and a positive semidefinite one.

This chapter provides a complete and systematic introduction to the differential calculus on finite dimensional normed vector spaces. Among the main theorems proved are the mean value theorem, the inverse and implicit function theorems, the rank theorem, symmetry of higher order derivatives, Taylor’s theorem and the strong form of local existence and uniqueness theorem for ODEs using methods based on smooth uniform approximation. Statements and proofs are given of both the Leibniz rule and Faa di Bruno’s formula for the derivatives of products and composites of maps. In an appendix, there is a proof of the theorem of Frigyes Riesz on the equivalence of norms on a finite dimensional vector space.

Jordan Canonical Form (JCF) is one of the most important, and useful, concepts in linear algebra. The JCF of a linear transformation, or of a matrix, encodes all of the structural information about that linear transformation, or matrix. This book is a careful development of JCF. After beginning with background material, we introduce Jordan Canonical Form and related notions: eigenvalues, (generalized) eigenvectors, and the characteristic and minimum polynomials. We decide the question of diagonalizability, and prove the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. Then we present a careful and complete proof of the fundamental theorem: Let V be a finite-dimensional vector space over the field of complex numbers C, and let T : V → V be a linear transformation. Then T has a Jordan Canonical Form. This theorem has an equivalent statement in terms of matrices: Let A be a square matrix with complex entries. Then A is similar to a matrix J in Jordan Canonical Form, i.e., there is an invertible matrix P and a matrix J in Jordan Canonical Form with A = PJP-1. We further present an algorithm to find P and J, assuming that one can factor the characteristic polynomial of A. In developing this algorithm we introduce the eigenstructure picture (ESP) of a matrix, a pictorial representation that makes JCF clear. The ESP of A determines J, and a refinement, the labeled eigenstructure picture (lESP) of A, determines P as well. We illustrate this algorithm with copious examples, and provide numerous exercises for the reader.

It is known that for a topological vector space it is possible to be the coproduct of two of its subspaces in the category of vector spaces while not being the coproduct of the same subspaces in the category of topological vector spaces. There are however wide classes of spaces where this cannot occur, notably finite-dimensional spaces (but also some infinite-dimensional ones, for instance, Banach spaces). In contrast, this kind of phenomen occurs easily (and frequently, as we here show) for finite-dimensional diffeological vector spaces, where its numerous instances are readily obtained in any dimension starting from 2 2 . After briefly reviewing what is known on this question in some classical categories, we provide an overview of this phenomenon and some of its implications for finite-dimensional diffeological vector spaces, indicating briefly its connections with some other subjects.
