Abstract

in bounded domains ~ of R n. Besides certain mild differentiability restrictions on the structure of A, it is assumed only that B is an increasing function of its second argument. We shall also establish a related comparison theorem for solutions of elliptic type differential inequalities, and indicate various methods for reducing the degree of smoothness required. In order to exhibit the ideas more clearly, we present in Section 1 a simple special case of the uniqueness theorem with sufficient regularity assumptions to remove most of the technicalities. Section 2 contains the main results of the paper, as noted above. It is of interest that uniqueness does not in general hold for elliptic equations of the non-divergence form
