Abstract
ABSTRACT:The problems of geriatric patients in institutions are discussed. Their basic needs can be classified as physiological, safety and security, affiliation, esteem and self‐actualization. Factors in institutional life which militate against the fulfillment of these needs are depersonalization, biologization, dependency, authoritarianism, staff convenience and staff insensitivity. Recommendations are made for attempts to overcome these negative factors.
