Abstract

Abstract Undamped nonlinear oscillations of the molecular director in a homeotropically aligned nema-tic liquid crystal have been observed in the field of an elliptically polarized laser beam at normal incidence. This new nonlinear optical phenomenon has been studied with a sensitive heterodyne interferometer/lpolarimeter. A physical explanation of the results based on the total angular momentum conservation and on Self-Induced Stimulated Light Scattering is also presented.
