Abstract

The presence of Hemitragus in the rissian levels of the Cèdrescave is confirmed. Its constitutes a new species, Hemitragus cedrensis nov.sp., which has morphological features intermediate between H. bonali of the European Middle Pleistocene and the living H. jemlabicus. H. cedrensis is present in the Riss III levels and those of the beginning of the Riss-Würm of the Rigabe cave (Artigues, Var) and in the early Würmian unit of the Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche cave (Bidon, Ardèche). This species, which seems to succeed H. bonali, would be a good stratigraphic indicator of the end of the Middle Pleistocene in Provence. Its presence at the beginning of the Würmian period set the probleme of its chronological extent in the Upper Pleistocene as also that of the date of its extinction.
