Abstract

Does the very nature of architectural practice preclude architects from creating spaces that foster freedom for their users? And what is freedom anyway? Peggy Deamer – a practising architect and Professor of Architecture at Yale University – sets out her point of view. Citing theorists from Karl Marx to Theodor Adorno and from Michel Foucault to Slavoj Zizek, she examines the particular challenges presented to architects by Neoliberalism, and discusses how they might generate a healthier working and living climate for all.
