Abstract

Recent years have seen the growing use of Twitter by diplomats and world leaders. One notable example is US President Donald Trump’s use of Twitter to attack foreign leaders or lambast multilateral organizations. Some have suggested, that Trump’s use of Twitter is representative of a new diplomatic language. Using the case study of Permanent Missions, this article demonstrates, that Twitter has brought about a new language in the UN. Specifically, diplomats’ language now consists of short messages accompanied by visuals that help frame policies. Moreover, diplomats have embraced the use of emojis to anchor the meaning of their messages. However, this article also demonstrates that diplomats’ language on Twitter is un-›Trumpian‹ as diplomats’ messages remain eloquent, moderate and hopeful.
