•A method for calculating the bearing capacity of spread foundations in rock is presented.•Bearing capacity of spread foundations on rock masses based on modified Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion.•Charts and figures are presented for a quick obtaining of bearing capacity for shallow foundations.•Comparison of the ultimate bearing capacity using the Hoek and Brown criterion and the modified Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion.
