The Military Technical Institute (MTI) is the largest military scientific and research institution in the Republic of Serbia. It mainly realizes its supply chain from the approved budget funds of the Republic of Serbia, while a smaller part is realized from its own revenues. Her continuous work to improve non-financial performance within the supply chain as well as motivate employees to manage their supply chain integration (SCI) initiatives requires intellectual capital (IC) tracking and reporting. Analysis and reporting on IC in MTI can be done within the human, organizational and social dimensions of IC. This paper will examine the role of IC reporting and examine its impact on SCI in MTI. The aim of the paper is to determine that the monitoring and reporting of IC affects the process of SCI in MTI.

The Military Technical Institute (MTI), as the largest military scientific-research institution in the Ministry of Defense, mostly realizes its supply chain from the budget of the Republic of Serbia, while a smaller part is realized from its own revenues. The ongoing effort to improve its performance within the supply chain, but also the relevant role of human resources in MTI to manage their supply chain integration initiatives, uses an intellectual capital framework to analyze human, organizational and social capital in supply chain integration. In particular, it is proposed that intellectual or capital drive the integration of supply chains into MTI. The aim of this paper is to prove that intellectual capital influences the integration of processes and activities in supply chains in MTI.

An Examination of the Relationship between Intellectual Capital and Supply Chain Integration in Humanitarian Aid Organizations: A Survey‐Based Investigation of Food Banks
  • Nov 23, 2017
  • Decision Sciences
  • Cigdem Ataseven + 2 more

ABSTRACTFood banks are humanitarian aid organizations that collect, organize, and deliver food to nonprofit member agencies and also to individuals to help alleviate the society's hunger problem. The supply chain of food banks is characterized by private sector companies, individual donors and governmental agencies providing monetary support and food inventory on the supply side, and the member agencies such as food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and volunteers delivering support on the demand side. Within the purview of this supply chain, food banks strive to improve their performance, which is commonly measured in terms of the amount of food delivered to the communities in need. Food banks rely on managerial talent that is relatively more constrained than the private sector and also use a voluntary workforce for attaining their performance goals. Considering the unique yet pertinent role of human assets in food banks to manage their supply chain integration initiatives, we employ an intellectual capital framework to analyze the human, organizational, and social capital antecedents of supply chain integration in food banks. Specifically, we suggest that intellectual capital drives supply chain integration in humanitarian organizations. Moreover, we propose specific relationships between the dimensions of intellectual capital. A carefully crafted survey is used to inform our results. The results indicate that human capital significantly impacts social capital, which, in turn, drives all supply chain integration dimensions. We discuss the implications of our findings for managing intellectual capital in the not‐for‐profit sector and offer directions for future research.

Big data adoption and performance: mediating mechanisms of innovation, supply chain integration and resilience
  • Dec 9, 2024
  • Supply Chain Management: An International Journal
  • Rajeev Ranjan Kumar + 1 more

PurposeThis study aims to examine how big data adoption (BA) helps to improve innovation capability, supply chain integration, resilience and organizational performance through direct and mediating mechanisms.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a combination of meta-analytic approaches (meta-structural equation modeling and meta-regression) using 205 effect sizes from 76 prior empirical studies. It leverages the organization information processing theory as a theoretical lens to analyze the proposed relationships. This study estimates heterogeneity in the relationship between BA and innovation capability based on the meta-regression by considering different types of moderators: digital competitiveness score (DCS), national culture, type of economies and gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.FindingsThe findings indicate that BA improves the innovation capability of the organization, supply chain integration and resilience, which consequently drives organizational performance. The results show that the innovation capability mediating effect is higher between BA and supply chain integration than between BA and supply chain resilience link. However, supply chain resilience and integration are equally effective in translating innovation capability influence to organizational performance. The authors find that developing countries reap more benefits from BA in driving innovation, and country culture plays a vital role in driving innovations.Research limitations/implicationsThis study offers multiple theoretical implications. First, deriving from organization information processing theory, the authors recognized that BA and innovation capability complement each other, which improves the information processing capacity of the organizations, enabling supply chain integration, resilience and organizational performance (Bahrami et al., 2022; Gupta et al., 2020; Chatterjee et al., 2022). This study is one of few that analyzed how BA and innovation capability work together to drive supply chain integration, resilience and organizational performance, which was not collectively studied in existing studies, meta-analyses or reviews to ascertain the direct and mediating mechanisms (Aryal et al., 2020; Oesterreich et al., 2022; Ansari and Ghasemaghaei, 2023; Bag and Rahman, 2023; Alvarenga et al., 2023). Second, our study offers integrated and more definitive results regarding identified relationships. More precisely, the study provides statistically significant direct effects with the help of meta-analysis and meta-structural equation modeling to remove the ambiguity in the literature. Third, apart from the above definitive relationships, mediation analysis contributes to academia in identifying significant mediating mechanisms related to innovation capability, supply chain integration and resilience. Innovation capability partially and significantly mediates between BA and supply chain integration/resilience. Fourth, meta-regression provides valuable insights related to DCS, national culture and type of economies in the supply chain context. In fact, this study is the first one to examine the effects of DCS and all dimensions of national culture on the BA−INV relationship and overcome certain limitations that exist in the literature (Oesterreich et al., 2022; Ansari and Ghasemaghaei, 2023; Nakandala et al., 2023).Practical implicationsBig data is captured through evolving digital technologies such as intelligent sensors, radio frequency identification tags, global positioning system (GPS) locations and social media, which generate large data sets. Thus, managers must extract value from such a large data set and transition from big data to BA. This transition encompasses retrieving unknown patterns and insights from big data, its interpretations and extracting meaningful actions (Gupta et al., 2020; Hallikas et al., 2021). This study confirms that organizational capabilities in terms of BA and innovation enable supply chain integration and resilience. Managers must concentrate on BA and innovation capability simultaneously rather than making a trade-off between capabilities (Morita and Machuca, 2018) to drive supply chain integration, resilience and performance. For example, Morita and Machuca (2018) study revealed that many companies are doing trade-offs between capabilities and innovation. Hence, the findings clarified confusion among practitioners and confirmed that BA improves innovation capability, consequently enabling higher supply chain integration and resilience. Thus, managers investing in innovation capability will be more confident about integration, resilience and performance outcomes.Originality/valueThis is one of the early studies that examine the underlying mechanisms of innovation capability, supply chain integration and resilience between BA and organizational performance. Moderation analysis with a DCS, national culture, type of economies and GDP per capita explains the heterogeneity between the BA and innovation capability relationship.

  • International Journal of Emerging Markets
  • Masood Nawaz Kalyar + 2 more

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential role of innovativeness in determining supply chain (SC) integration and to foster the SC performance of manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The study also proposes that the SC integration–performance relationship is contingent to the degree of environmental uncertainty (EU).Design/methodology/approachThe data were collected from 321 manufacturing SMEs working in Pakistan. Respondents were owners/CEOs/managers of the firms. Considering the formative nature of indicators of SC efficiency and effectiveness, partial least square-based structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the data.FindingsThe results indicate that innovativeness positively influences the dimensions of SC integration which in turn affects SC efficiency and effectiveness. The results support the presence of moderation for the relationship between the dimensions of both SC integration and performance. The findings suggest that firms should endeavor to accomplish innovativeness and SC integration, as they jointly promote SC performance.Practical implicationsSMEs can use innovativeness as an important tool to increase SC integration and SC performance. For SMEs with a highly volatile and dynamic environment, managers should achieve SC integration and include external integration orientation at the strategic level in order to reap the greatest advantages from SC integration.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the SC literature by exploring the effect of the nascent determinant (innovativeness) of SC practices and performance to expand and deepen current understanding of the potential role of innovativeness in the SC context. Furthermore, considering EU as a moderator opens up new avenues of research to elucidate the SC integration–performance nexus in the emerging market context.

  • Nov 10, 2021
  • Asian Journal of Business Ethics
  • Kam Pui Liu + 1 more

The purpose of this study is to propose a research model to investigate the relationships between supply chain digitalization, supply chain integration, and firm performance. In particular, the mediating effect of supply chain integration and the moderating effect of supply chain digitalization in the research model are examined. An online survey is administered to Chinese employees (N = 264) working in the supply chain industry. Data are analyzed by the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using the SmartPLS 3.0. The findings of this study reveal that both digitalization and supply chain integration have a positive influence on firm performance. Moreover, supply chain integration partially mediates the relationship between supply chain digitalization and firm performance. Meanwhile, supply chain digitalization positively moderates the relationship between supply chain integration and firm performance. These findings address the research gap in the extant literature and provide practical implications in ethical supply chain management. In particular, this study reveals that supply chain digitalization can drive a higher level of ethical supply chain in the perspective of supply chain visibility and efficiency in operations.

  • Journal of Manufacturing Technology Management
  • Abdul Basit + 4 more

Purpose In light of the complex and volatile business environment, the study aims to examine the influence of supply chain technological capabilities (SCTCs) on supply chain learning (SCL) and supply chain integration (SCI). Additionally, it examines the impact of supply chain learning and integration on supply chain absorptive capacity, as well as the effect of supply chain absorptive capacity (SCAC) on supply chain resilience (SCR) and supply chain robustness (SCRO). Design/methodology/approach This study adopts a quantitative approach, with data collected from 411 manufacturing firms in China. For data analysis, PLS-SEM was utilized to achieve the study objectives. Findings The outcome reveals that SCTCs favorably influence both SCL and SCI. Furthermore, SCL and SCI positively affect SCAC, which in turn has a beneficial impact on the SCR and SCRO. Practical implications Practitioners gain actionable insights into leveraging SCTCs to enhance collaborative learning and integration, strengthening absorptive capacity. The study guides firms in designing adaptive supply chains by prioritizing technology adoption, knowledge-sharing mechanisms, and agile partnerships to mitigate disruptions. Originality/value Grounded in the dynamic capabilities view, this study advances academic understanding by empirically validating a novel framework linking SCTCs, SCL, SCI and SCAC to SCR and SCRO. Unlike prior studies, it uniquely examines the interplay of these constructs in disruption contexts, addressing a critical gap in supply chain literature. The findings reveal that SCTCs are foundational to fostering SCL and SCI, amplifying SCAC —a key driver of SCR and SCRO.

Supply chain visibility and integration - The current directions in organisations: A comprehensive literature review and research questions.
  • Feb 1, 2010
  • Kumaraguru Mahadevan

Senior Managers in industry have recognized whilst there is significant use of supply chain integration (SCI) technology over the last decade, there is apparent lack of supply chain visibility (SCV) across the supply chain (SC). The lack of visibility has also raised the question of information sharing between SC partners, by managers across the globe. The objective of this paper is to review, and report the current directions taken by academia, and practitioners to incorporate SCV into organizations through SCI, and the systematic approach taken to conduct a literature review to establish these directions. A comprehensive literature review structured around following key components: current state of global SC's ; SC blueprints, processes and strategies; current tools, systems, and techniques applied in supply chains, such as the SCOR model, and the integrated approach; the current SCI practices in industry. This paper concludes that, whilst there is significant breadth of research that has been carried out across the various the aspects of a SC, such as the tools, techniques, systems, current practices used in relation to SCV, SCI, and information sharing between SC partners, however there are limitations in terms of its depth, such as the current level of SCI in industry, and managements' expectation of integration in industry, raising research questions hence justifying further research. It further adds that whilst SCV, and SCI is given importance by both academia through research publications, and in industry by means of white papers, and industry developed solutions by consultants and managers, there are differing views about SCV and SCI.

Exploring the role of HR practices in supply chain
  • May 18, 2012
  • Journal of Advances in Management Research
  • Prachi Pandey + 2 more

Purpose The purpose of this study is to establish the importance of human resource (HR) practices in achieving high levels of supply chain (SC) integration through a conceptual framework (depicting the moderation effect of HR practices on the relationship between information sharing and SC integration) and validating the framework empirically to establish the proposed relationships. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual framework is proposed based on gaps in extant literature. Data from 60 automobile component manufacturing organizations in India are used to analyse the relationship between the study variables. Regression analysis is used to find the relative impact of predictor variable (Information sharing) on SC integration and the moderation effect of HR practices (training, collaborative performance systems and reward alignment) on this relationship. Findings The results indicate that information sharing has a significant effect on SC integration, and the relationship between these two variables is found to be positively moderated by “training” and “reward alignment”, while “collaborative performance systems” does not emerge as a significant moderator in the proposed relationships. Research limitations/implications It is expected that this study will contribute to both academics and practice. Along with extending the scope of research at the academic level, it is also expected to help practising managers to understand the importance of HR in SC, and to identify various HR practices which can be focused on to improve SC integration. Originality/value The framework and analysis presented in this paper help to provide an understanding of how HR practices of organizations can help in improving the relationship between information sharing and SC integration.

The synergistic and complementary effects of supply chain justice and integration practices on supply - chain performance : a conceptual framework and research prepositions
  • Jan 1, 2015
  • South African Journal of Economic and Management Sciences
  • Ziaullah, Muhammad + 2 more

In recent years, firms have been using their supply chain integration (SCI) as a competitive weapon in the intensive, globalised competitive arena. The contingent perspective in supply chain management maintains that it is necessary to observe the interaction between SCI practices and supply chain justice. A critical issue to be resolved is whether this fit leads to synergistic and complementary effects on supply chain performance. In order to contribute to this research problem, we analysed supply chain justice instances in order to determine the importance of supply chain justice, as well as highlights complementary role in SCI and its influences on supply chain performance. A conceptual framework has been developed and five propositions established to verify the contents of a theoretical study. Accordingly, balancing the adoption of SCI practices and supply chain justice will lead to the generation of greater benefits relative to the effect of both independent driving forces on supply chain performance. Furthermore, the proposed framework has been analysed in order to examine its applicability in the South African context. The study thereby suggests the empirical research guidelines and the paper concludes with a discussion of future research.

How Supply Chains affect Economies of Agglomeration. Evidence from Port of Constanta, Economics& Sociology
  • May 20, 2013
  • Economics & Sociology
  • Crăciun Mădălin Alexandru

ABSTRACT. In this paper I analyse how the economic agglomeration of a port is affected by the integration of companies composing it into international supply chains, studying the specific case of container terminals from Constanta Port. To notice the effects that supply chains have on the economies of agglomeration Iobserve internal and external economies from the perspectives of scale, scope and complexity. Afterwards, to emphasize the distinction between supply chains and agglomeration economies I engage in a comparative study between a global and a local terminal operator, both active on Constanta Port container handling marketKeywords: economies, supply chain, container terminal, Constanta PortJEL Classification : R11, R12, L91, L14, L20IntroductionFor centuries, ports have formed locations for agglomeration of economic activity. The obvious reason for this is the existence of a set of conditions favourable for the outbreak and development of specialized activities related to the handling of goods and passengers. These conditions are composed of geographical location and the provision of specialized infrastructure. Therefore, shared inputs in infrastructure become foundations for shared inputs in economic activity, thus facilitating the development of industrial concentrations with their derived agglomeration economies. In terms of the deterritorialization of production activities (Scholte, 2000) from the last 20 years, against the context of unprecedented growth in the flows of goods, services and knowledge and the mobility of persons (Zaharia, 2004), a paradigm shiftoccurred in the functions that ports, seen as clusters of specialized economic activities, fulfil. Thus, they began to be perceived as integrated elements in value-driven chain systems (Robinson, 2002). In the role of key elements of international supply networks, companies located in ports become virtually dependent on the activity of the networks they belong to. In the case of port economic agglomerations, there is a shiftof analysis from the firms in the system to the system of firms.Although there is a growing number of papers recognizing the important role that ports play on international supply chains (Slack and Fremont, 2005, Carbone and De Martino, 2003, Bichou and Gray, 2004, 2005, Robinson, 2006, Panayides and Song, 2009) there have been limited empirical investigations on how supply chains affect economies of agglomeration located in ports. In fact, the association between the theory of economies of agglomeration and that of supply chains is not a common one. This is mainly because of the contrasting nature of the two theories, one stressing the importance of geographical proximity, and the other one the global network. This paper provides a mean to bring together the two divergent theories by reuniting them on the common ground represented by a seaport.Understanding how agglomerations, in all their perspectives of scale, scope and complexity are affected by the integration in the supply chains, in the specific context of a particular port (Constanta Port) is the goal of this paper. For accomplishing this objective, the research will focus on revealing the effects that integration in international supply chains has had on the economies of agglomeration occurred in container terminal operations, one of the most dynamic segments of port activity, that greatly impacts the whole of port economic agglomeration. The analysis will not stop only to the container operations segment, but will also employ specific empirical evidence, in order to underline the discrepancies between a segment of the port market that is integrated in supply chains and the rest. The article is organized as follows. In the next section I review the literature specific to agglomeration economies in order to define the main aspects of theoretical issues. In the second section I analyse the main features of a port economic agglomeration. …

Analysing supply chain integration through a systematic literature review: a normative perspective
  • Sep 2, 2014
  • Supply Chain Management: An International Journal
  • Muhammad Mustafa Kamal + 1 more

Purpose – This paper aims to focus on systematically analysing and synthesising the extant research published on supply chain integration (SCI) area, given the significance of SCI research area. More specifically, the authors aim to answer three questions: “Q1 – What are the factors (e.g. both driving and inhibiting) that influence SCI?”, “Q2 – What are the key developments (e.g. both in research and industry) in SCI area?” and “Q3 – What are the approaches employed/discussed to integrate supply chains?”. Over the past decade, SCI has gained increasing attention in the supply chain management (SCM) context, both from the practitioners’ perspective and as a research area. In realising the global transformations and competitive business environment, a number of organisations are collaborating with their supply chain (SC) partners, to conduct seamless SC operations. Design/methodology/approach – A systematic and structured literature review is carried out to observe and understand the past trends and extant patterns/themes in the SCI research area, evaluate contributions and summarise knowledge, thereby identifying limitations, implications and potential directions of further research. Thus, to trace the implementation of SCI practices, a profiling approach is used to analyse 293 articles (published in English-speaking peer-reviewed journals between 2000 and 2013) extracted from the Scopus database. The Systematic Review Approach proposed by Tranfield et al. (2003) was followed to analyse and synthesise the extant literature on SCI area. Findings – The analysis presented in this paper has identified relevant SCI research studies that have contributed to the development and accumulation of intellectual wealth to the SCI and SCM area. Each of the 293 papers was examined for achieving the aim and objectives of the research, the method of data collection, the data analysis method and quality measures. While some of the papers provided information on all of these categories, most of them failed to provide all the information, especially for Q2 and Q3 that resulted in 23 and 21 papers, respectively. Research limitations/implications – This study would have benefited from the analysis of further journals; however, the analysis of 293 articles from leading journals in the field of operations and SCM was deemed sufficient in scope. Moreover, this research has implications for researchers, journal editors, practitioners, universities and research institutions. It is likely to form the basis and motivation for profiling other database resources and specific operations and SCM-type journals in this area. Practical implications – This systematic literature review highlights a taxonomy of contextual factors driving and inhibiting SCI for researchers and SC practitioners to refer to while researching or implementing SCI. It also exemplifies some areas for future research, along with the need for researchers to focus on developing more practical techniques for implementing SCI and improving organisational performance. Originality/value – The prime value and uniqueness of this paper lies in analysing and compiling the existing published material in relation to Q1, Q2 and Q3, including examining other variables (such as yearly publications, geographic location of each publication, type of publication, type of research methods used), which lacks in the recent published five SCI literature review-based articles (by Kim, 2013; Leuschner et al., 2013; Alfalla-Luque et al., 2013; Parente et al., 2008; Fabbe-Costes and Jahre, 2007). This has been achieved by extracting and synthesising existing publications using “Supply Chain Integration” keyword. This paper provides a critique of the conceptual and empirical works in SCI discipline and offers research agendas that can stimulate future researchers to carefully explore the topic.
